I used to have an N3 and I had an external LCD screen connected to it and it always said "no signal" unless I decided to watch a dvd.

Now I have a D3 and I want to connect it to another external LCD and I would like to know if it's possible to have a screen saver on the 2nd LCD it while I use the D3 whether I'm using it or not.

I would think that a screen saver would be something that the external video device would need to offer. I haven't really done my homework on external monitors, so IDK if there are any like this out there, but it seems like a common issue that quality video units would have a solution for.

I agree with what your saying. I just wonder if the D3 sends a signal only when you are using it or can you have it display just a background pic or something.

You can turn off the AV out as a workaround, right? Again, I don't have an external unit, but I remember seeing the option to disable the outputs.
