Hey all,

Does anyone have there AVIC-D2 connected to a carputer? I thought I saw something on the outside of the box that said windows compatiable.

Instead of buying the pioneer 6 disk DVD changer, or getting a non-pioneer brand (that wont allow me to use the screen), I thought about installing a carputer with windows instead. That way I can still use touch screen, get DVD playback and have a massive MP3 jukebox.

Has anyone does this? If so, what windows do I need to use touchscreen?

I assume this would work though the video IN and audio IN ports right?

If anyone can drop some info, I would appreciate it.

Thank you!

No need to purchase an expensive carputer. Purchase the Vantec AVOX Mobile Media player:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6855182001

then purchase yourself a 120GB notebook harddrive for it like I did, and instant gratification! This thing plays mp3's, wma's (except WMA9 Lossless codec), OGG, ripped DVD's, ripped DVD's in ISO format, mpgs, DiVx (avi's), etc etc. I have one in my truck hooked up to my N3 through the AV inputs and works great! I have several DVD's on it, many music videos, and TONS on mp3's/wma's as well!

Interesting... So this thing will connect though the audio and video inputs of my D2 and allow me to use the touchscreen?

unfortunately no, you cannot use the touchscreen interface to control it, but you cannot use the D2 touchscreen for a carputer interface either. The Avox comes with an infrared remote I use to control it. It does connect to the audio/video in, so I can see what's going on

It will not let you control it through the headunit.

I don't have it, but I assume there are controls on the unit to scroll through the files.

Are you sure I can not use a carputer though the touch screen? I dont have the box in front of me now, but I thought I saw something that said windows compatiable or something?

Yeah. I want to use my screen to navigate to my music. Hence the reason I wanted a carputer.

I just looked at the box.

It has the Windows emblem and it says "Plays Windows Media," meaning it'll play windows media files.

It cannot control a carputer through the touchscreen.

thanks sf! LOL You always bail me out ;) I dont know if you saw my post in the other thread SF, but I went out and purchased a CD-VC1 so I could have the remote mount and straps, so I am good for now. Thanks for the offer the other day bud!

Ram,

I've been into the carputer thing for a few years and there is no way that I know of to hook the head unit up to the computer. Even if you could, the screen resolution of the head unit is not going to do justification through a RCA input, it would just look grainy.

A nice solution would be a UMPC device, if yo do not know what they are you can learn about them here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/umpc/default.mspx and then just run the audio out to the stero's aux. in, at that point you could still view your nav on one screen and a video on the UMPC.

wow $1000 with a 40GB harddrive? I paid like only $150 for the Avox with a 120GB harddrive!

Can anyone tell me how well this would work on a D2?

Thanks,

Mike

it would work the same. you use the d2 as a video display only, and use the device as a source
Posted Nov 22, 2006 · 21:02 UTC#16
So I would run the Audio and Video into my D2. How would I handle power?
Posted Nov 22, 2006 · 21:15 UTC#18
thanks.

How does the display look on the D2 screen?
Posted Nov 23, 2006 · 01:04 UTC#19
OK so it will work? But how well. Like a PC connected to a projector with the F4 key? Has anyone really used this... 8)

the picture would look as good as a dvd player hooked to your TV. But remember it all depends on the quality of the file. If it's a crappy mpg download, it will look crappy. I use mostly DVD-Rips I did myself and the pictures look amazing.

Well I ordered it. Cant wait till it comes in!
Posted Nov 23, 2006 · 15:14 UTC#22
What size harddrive did you get?
Posted Nov 26, 2006 · 03:21 UTC#23
120GB
Posted Nov 26, 2006 · 03:40 UTC#24
Nice. You will definitely enjoy it. I ripped many many MANY movies I rented from Netflix to my 120GB harddrive and have enjoyed it quite a bit while the wife shops at the mall lol

Did you have any problems with the PSP car adaptor. I bought the one from the link you posted. But if you move it at all the unit looses power.
