Is it possible to load Garmin maps on the AVIC F500BT. I wanted to load a map like this on it.

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.as ... lang=en-US

I have not bought one yet but im debating over getting the Pioneer or the garmin in my link.

Which one would be better, pros? cons?

It is possible to run Garmin software on the AVIC series (with LeetLauncher), although you lose some of the features of the device (so it is easier to buy a Garmin then). Otherwise, current version of the navigation software in AVIC does not display roadsigns like that. Next update (already announced for Europe) will, though.

Having said that... navigation software itself (iGO 8.0) in the AVIC is significantly more powerful than Garmin. Maps are another thing... Neither Garmin nor Pioneer actually make maps. They purchase them from a third party map provider. Garmin uses maps from Navteq, while iGO 8.0 uses maps from TeleAtlas. Version 8.3 can use maps from both providers, so if/when we get that upgrade difference will be more of a moot point.

Currently, very generally speaking, Navteq maps are better on their home turf in US, and TeleAtlas maps are better on their home turf in Europe (neither are perfect, of course). The problem with AVIC is that it ships with pretty old maps (2007.1, so they have been compiled sometime in 2006), but it is possible to find newer ones.

Now my personal opinion is that road display like on that screenshot is useless.I have that on my Navigon handlehd, and find myself turning it off every time it comes up... As long as you have lane guidance (which AVIC has) and see where you are supposed to get off the highway, you should be all set...

I would like to use the Garmin Maps as well as it seems that on long trips my Garmin will come up with routes that are much faster and shorter, we are talking about 100 - 200 miles difference when going from Mo to TX ( where I go is about 680 miles away). I could see it if the Pioneer was taking me on interstate routes but it is using the same type roads.

You could load Garmin up with LeetLauncher, but you loose some of the features.

In the meanwhile, you could play with the route correctness setting in SYS.TXT

Add this section:

[route]

correctness=90

It defaults to 70 or so, with lower settings doing faster calculation but less optimal route, and higher numbers doing better route at an expense of spending more time to generate it. Some mods even expose this setting in the interface.

In my experience it can make quite a difference in routing.

You just add that anywhere in the sys.txt?

Pretty much can be added anywhere in sys.txt. If there's already a [route] section, just add correctness=90 in that section.

Thanks... I'll try it out.... is there a big difference in the time it takes going from default 70 to 90?

It depends on route distance and if you're running multiple stops. Everyone has a different opinion on what's a long time. Personally, I rather it take a bit longer if it'll give better directions.

Depends on the route size. Still seems to be under a minute routing from Chicago to Vancouver, so seems to be a decent tradeoff to me. On local routes may not be particularly noticeable even.

If you feel like installing Stanislavovich's mod, it has a slider in route settings where you can adjust it on the fly and compare routing.
