I bought my z1 from this friend of mine who runs an audio video shop in florida and he had this unit as a display model for like a month or so and sold it to me for a really good price, but so i far i found out that the z1 is not playing DVD's. i've tried many store bought dvd's but its says unreadable disk. As far as my friend says, he tested the unit fully and it was in excellent working condition. So now the problem persists and i need some info as to what can be wrong with it. It plays all the audio cd's, mp3, plays my ipod and all the navigation features but its only the DVDs that are not played. Should i call in pioneer and send it in as a warranty request service. but i am not sure if they will honor the warranty since i bought from a audio video shop. Or should i tell the pioneer ppl that it was a gift. Any suggestion would help, Thanks in advance...

if he is your friend, he should warranty it for you. display model or not, it should be working and under warranty. If you can hear the audio portion of the DVD but not the video portion, then i'ts likely the by-pass... but if you are continually getting the un-readable sign, then the unit is defective....

he should not balk at this... your 'friend'

And your "friend" had to purchase it from someone (pioneer, pioneer distributor, etc.) so they will definitely have some system setup for getting Pioneer to repair their units. Have your "friend" speak to whoever he got it from

check to see if its dirty? maybe needs cleaning.. like laser cleaning. Also, are you sure your friend checked the dvd player, that would be something I would think someone wouldnt check in a "quick" test of the unit.
