i know i gotta use an sd card but do i have to make a folder and then how do i get them onto the unit?

just follow the instructions in there

If you are using test mode to install, copy the splash screen you want (must be 800 x 480 in size) to

My Flash Disk/DATA/SplashPic

Restart unit

Then when you go into Menu/settings/system settings/Splash Screen

to change the splash sceen it will be listed there.
