Now I know ya need an external DVD unit to play DVD's through the AVIC-D1, my question is, once you have the external unit attached can you play them directly through the unit or does it have to go through the external?
Here's my question...
The movies will always have to be put in the seperate dvd player. If its a pioneer dvd player, it will show up as a source in the menu and you can control it through the head unit. If its someone elses, you will need to run it through the A/V input and it will show up as A/V, but you will need a remote or something to control it with because you won't be able to do anything from the touchscreen
Don't forget you'll have to turn on the av input too. It's under the initial menu I believe.
I keep my movies on my 60gig ipod video and use a av cable that can be purchased from the apple store. Works perfect.

Sounds like an excellent idea. Can you watch video from your iPod when the vehicle is moving (without the bypass hack) ?
Too expensive. Get yourself a Vantec AVOX Media Jukebox and a 120GB laptop harddrive like I did
Do a search and save some bucks. Get double the storage of an iPod and no need for silly iTunes either. Avox can also play Divx movies straight up, no need to convert.
your not able to control the storage device from the avic though.. say for music are you?

But you can't control the video from the iPod on the AVIC either. we're talking about movies, not music. ![]()
before i give you a stfu, I will assume your NOT being insulting by telling me to re-read. As I have read it, I am trying to suggest an alternative to loosing your control features by connecting the ipod to something external.
I understand it isnt about music. but why would you want to Loose control, wouldnt you want to gain it? You CAN control the music on the ipod from the avic with the addon. So looking for a device that would allow video playback to be integrated into the unit if even just by the a/v jacks would be nice (without) loosing the addon's control. But thinking back now, I believe the avic takes over the ipod and displays a "do not disconnect" or something which prevents you from on the fly switching to video and playing it through said a/v jacks. One would have to unplug the ipod and loose the charging capability while playing video, but a charger isnt nearly as expensive as the $50 price tag that the roadshow cables boast. Though the roadshow cables look pretty slick.

This idea is NOT too expensive for me ... it is a $15 idea, because I already own an iPod.
Your assumption was right. I wasnt trying to be insulting. I edited my post. Sorry budbefore i give you a stfu, I will assume your NOT being insulting by telling me to re-read.
I believe there was a post on here somewhere that mentioned a pretty simple way to modify your Pioneer ipod adaptor so that you still keep the ability to use the controls on your ipod. That would solve that part of the problem

Found it:
Copied this from the ipod section. Would seem to solve the control problem
For those of you who bought the Pioneer Ipod adapter and want control back of your Ipod when connected to the in car system, here is how you do it with out having to disconnect the Ipod from the dock connector to pick your music.
It will of course invalidate your warranty on the adapter but you will have control. Open up the Ipod adapter box, just two Phillips screws, you should see a connector that has all the wires going to it from the white cables coming into the box from the Ipod. Carefully pull the connector upwards to disconnect it. In the middle there should be a blue wire, lift the little peg that holds the very small socket that the blue wire is connected to and it should now just pull out. Put a bit of electrical tape around it to stop it touching any thing and put the top back on the box. Of course you do this with the power off and pull the power connecter out of the Ipod adapter.
After reconnecting it all, you should now have full control of your Ipod to pick your music. The down side is you loose the auto stop and start when you turn the car ignition on and off.
auto stop and start? please school me on that... thanks
I run two IPOD's one in the back with the pioneer ipod interface and one in the glove box.
The one in the glove box is for movies I plug it into the av-cable
When you turn off the car and get out, it remembers where you were in the song. When you get back in, it automatically starts in the same spot where it left off

so it will just default back to the beginning of the playlist or or that song or what?
hmm you know what i just thought of, a switch!
maybe a toggle switch between this blue wire would solve this problem, and give you the ability to not loose your functions. Heck, you could connect this with say a relay and have it all auto, no toggle switch needed. like remote ignition being the trigger, anyone know how long as in seconds or milliseconds is needed. LIke for example, if you wired the relay to say ignition and NOT acc which your radio would be wired too, and if you turned the car off to the acc position radio would still be on, then turned off to key position and took key out, what kind of time is needed for the ipod to "read" that the blue wire is connected back so as to remember where your at in the song
welp, heres what I have done and found.
installed ipod adapter with a switch on the blue wire. Avic is unable to control ipod at all, ipod continues to play after car is shut off, not sure if its constant or if the ipod times out cuz the deck is off, but this would kill the battery after a few hours, over night I am sure. also, connecting back the blue wire while avic is on does nothing in way of allowing controls to be back on the avic you must turn avic off and wait a few minutes, and possibly unplug connector to ipod and reconnect. Then when you turn avic back on control functions pop up. Soooooo
this means for use with video, those few times in my case, the ipod will get the switch flipped to disconnect the blue wire from the ipod unit.... and all other times it will be switched to allow the blue wire to stay connected. it just is not convenient to have to control the ipod from the ipod.
hope this helps someone, sorry if it has been covered already.
