Looking at Z110 vs 9140

I was originally planning to replace the stock nav in my M3 with the 9140. After seeing the roadshow videos I'm now leaning toward the Z110BT but have a few questions/concerns. I plan to use it with my iPhone 3G.

1.) Does the iPod/iPhone interface allow music from iPhone apps like Pandora? If so can you skip ahead using the steering wheel controls.

2.) The voice. No offense but the voice from the roadshow videos is horrid. It's 2009 not 1985. Is that really the voice for all the prompts? If so can it be changed?

3.) I noticed there is no remote voice command control like there is for the 9140. My M3 has a voice control button on the steering wheel for the stock unit. Has anyone successfully programmed the PAC interface to allow a steering wheel button to activate the voice control?

1. Yes, you can even use the bluetooth audio feature with Pandora but you will have no control from the head unit itself. It will control the actually ipod audio as far as track skipping and play pause. The 9140 is exactly the same way.

2. Thats as good as it gets unfortunately. That is the reality at this point when you have an AI voice. The 9140 is no better in this respect.

3. Not as far as I know at this point. There is a chance PAC may update their unit to support this feature. After the release of the F series, PAC did update their unit to take advantage of the additional BT features to be used with the F series.

I can't believe no one has hacked that voice yet. The stock nav voice on my Acura and M3 are much better and more natural sounding. I could even hack my M3 and get the British female voice :D

For Pandora does anything show on the head unti display as far as artist or anything? I'm guessing no but just wanted to check.

Did the nav on your M3 pronounce street names? If it didn't then it was not an AI voice. Useing sampled audio voices is obviously going to sound more natural but you don't get as much turn by turn detail. As far as info on the screen with BT audio with either unit the answer is no. All you get is the transport controls.

I don't know about his M3.... But My X5 is AI... It can make a mess with names/pronounciations..lol... Just as the "Anna" voice on the Z's hose names up....

If you have Vista or later, fire up the narrator in the accessibility options.... Same voice..."Anna"

I believe it did but I've only used it once. I haven't had the TL for awhile so I'm not sure. I did find an old thread where someone did it on the F series but that thread died off a few months ago. I've never used a TomTom, Garmin, or other standalone device but don't they give turn by turn? I wish Pioneeer would follow the TomTom model and sell different voice packages seperately. The Z110BT is still the one I would choce if I do in fact replace my stock nav but I can easily see that voice really annoying me. Especially since it is also used for all the voice command prompts.

I'm a little confused on the iPhone stuff. Does Pandora only work via bluetooth or also through the ipod interface? I understand the controls would not work via bluetooth since Apple only implemented A2DP in v3.0. If Pandora does indeed work via the wired ipod interface do you get any on screen info and control functionality?

It does work with the Ipod interface as well. Just select the ipod source from the head unit, pause the currently playing song, and then launch Pandora on the phone. Basically it will play through the opened connection as the music from the ipod app would if it wasn't paused. That being said, you dont get any onscreen controls for the Pandora app. It will all have to be controlled from the phone.

Just read that the v3.1 software due out in Spetember for the iPhone will include the AVCP (or whatever the reote control profile is) bluetooth profile. This would allow music navigation when using Bluetooth streaming. Whether this works with apps like Pandora remains to be seen. I'm going to contact Pandora and see if it will work and if not if there will be an update in the future. I just made my 2nd long roadtrip using Pandora from my iPhone and it is so much better than when I had XM (other than the occassional dead area driving through the country :D).

Old thread...but I just started playing with an app from Cydia called Music Controls 1.2....

I guess it's a custom BT stack that supports AVRCP... it's truly a nicely written app and plays nice with the 3GS' s VC and Kirakae.... It comes with backgrounder functionality in which supports the majority of the most popular music/radio apps....

So far I've only used it with IPod App...Iheartradio...Pandora.... All of which works flawlessly on the 110BT
