Like the title says, can i simply download the 3.01 from the x910 from pioneers site and do the update?

that would be a no that is for the x series, the f series update is a paid for update. You can always go download the x series image and drag/drop it to the f series drive replacing the current firmware.

But from 2.006 to 3.01 available on the site, no it will just boot up normally if you install it from there.
