Just curious if anyone has tried any different DEM files?

I tried using the one here:

http://www.gpsunderground.com/forums/sh ... hp?t=10197

But it won't fit due to file size. IS there anything I can delete that si just taking up space on the unit? Also, is there any difference between this and the stock?

Last Question is what is the difference between the North America DEM and the UnitedStates DEM?

TIA

US DEM only covers USA, obviously, while NA one covers US and Canada (possibly Mexico, too...).

You can safely delete map and POI files for states/countries you are not planning on visiting (i.e. if you live on the mainland, Hawaii maps probably are of no big concern...).

Thanks Boris, so my last question is if I don't plan visiting Canada, I can delete NA DEM and just use US DEM?

Sure. Really, you can run without any DEM files whatsoever. While they do show some nice terrain, if you are in a sufficiently rugged area, their value for actual navigation is, essentially, zero.

I have actually removed all the maps, buildings and poi for all states that are not even near me that I won't be driving to. I have the surrounding 8 states loaded and I removed all the DEM files but the NA_dem file that I have on my site. This left plenty of room to install other stuff.

Thanks all, removed enough to get the files on. I know it may be regional, or maybe US units don't show it, but what files show trees and background in the gps?
