Will the z show text messages on the screen like the kenwood 9140?

No.

and very few phones will support that feature.

I have the iphone 3g. My buddy has the 3gs and his works on the kenwood. Just wondering.

Thats news to me. There was no support mentioned in any of the iphone firmware releases in reference to SMS support with external devices.

I had an older Garmin (external) and it supported sending and reading (yes, it would transcribe your text message into voice). I didn't matter what kind of phone I had.

Yeah this lacking functionality is a serious oversight by pioneer i think. i hope either a software update or a hack will fix this someday.

Depends on who the text is from and who is in the car with you.

Hey I just read the x910 manual on page 80 it says, Announcing incoming

short mails

While the cellular phone and the navigation

system are connected, the following notice is

displayed when you get a new SMS message.

“New mail from: (sender’s name)” is displayed

and the notice disappears after eight seconds.

What the crap that is nowhere in our manual. Pioneer flagship navigation yeah right!

My F-series used to do that (same as the X-series.) In still didn't read the text to me....it just told me it got there. Pretty useless. Wish the Z would actually read me the whole message but apparently thats still not possible
