Connecting additional DVD player screens to the AVIC-F710BT

Hello all,

Me and my family are planning a trip to the Czech Republic which'll take place next year and we're now talking about getting ourselves two dvd-player screens for the headrests so our two boys can enjoy some Bob the Builder action from the backseats...

As said in the subject, we own an AVIC-F710BT device and we have our eyes set on the Pioneer AVD-W7900 screens. So I contacted Pioneer and asked if those screens could be combined with the navigation unit. The told me that I would not be able to send video data to the screens and use the navigation myself.

So now I am confused.

I read this on the Pioneer website:

"Simultaneous Navigation and AV Entertainment (-) Yes

Always be guided - no matter if you're listening to music, the radio or your passengers are watching a film on optional screens. Once you input your destination, our Sat Nav systems will continue guiding you, no matter the source."

The way I read this was: you can start an MP4 movie from SD, play this on the backseat screens (which are attached through the AV1 or AV2 canal) and use the navigation maps on the AVIC unit without the backseat viewers having to watch the roadmaps along with me.

Can anyone here confirm or deny my theory?

Hoping for an honest answer,

Kind regards,

Eric

It means that you will get voice turn directions even if the map is not displayed. It does not mean that you can display one thing on external screens and yet another thing (like the map) on the main screen. For that you would need a multi-zone system.

I didn't think the F710 played DVD's, i have a F910 and that does play DVD's.

I can play a DVD whilst driving and have that displayed on the rear headrest monitor whilst at the same time having the satnav (or DVD) displayed in the front on the head unit.

So yes famjager, you can have what you want but you'll need the 910, not the 710.

1 you can have somthing playing (CD, aux audio, or an Ipod) and still watch the nav on the front screen and have the sound play through the speakers, the biggest issue is that the 710's does not have a video out (since there is no DVD player) so even if you play a video off of the ipod on the main screen you can not send the video out to any aux screens, you can however use an external source for video (such as a seperate dvd player in the back seat) and send sound out of it to one of the inputs on the AVIC and have the sound play through the speakers while using the nav up front, you also can put the movies on an ipod and watch them on the main screen then using a Y-splitter split the video right before it goes into the AVIC and run it to an AUX screen (which is what i have to do with one of my co-workers trailblazer to get video on his factory flip down since his 700 doesn't have a video out)

in case i wasn't quite clear above,

you can have a seperate video source playing somthing in the back and send its audio and video in to the AVIC as AV1 or AV2 AND still use the nav with the sound (from the external source) playing through the speakers and the nav will interupt the sound when it needs to give directions

this is true for a US version, a Euro version may be different as i do not know for sure.

Thank you all for replying!

@joegr: The thing about the multi-zone system is exactly what Pioneer told me. But then I wonder why they put this text on their website (placed with the specs for the F710).

Simultaneous Navigation and AV Entertainment (-) Yes

Always be guided - no matter if you're listening to music, the radio or your passengers are watching a film on optional screens. Once you input your destination, our Sat Nav systems will continue guiding you, no matter the source.

The above, plus the fact that under related products they show the AVD-W7900 screens, made me believe that what I want is a possibility.

But I have to agree that the system not having an AV-out port is the biggest hint for it not being able to play video on alternate displays... :x

@pkbristol: The F710 does not play DVDs. I mentioned in my post "playing films" and by that meaning .avi or .mp4 files.
