I might be wrong, I read a while back that one is for building and the other landmarks. Having them both is a good thing they go into the building folder together. Normally there is one for each state, a 3DL and 3DC but they could be from different verions. So you may have a 3DC from 2008.10 maps and 3DL from 2009.6 maps and they will work fine.
Are such files (3dl,3dc,poi,fbl & dem) named in an 'ini-file' or does the system just scan for valid files and add them ?
For example , does the UK map have to have the UnitedKingdom.fbl filename or can I call it UK0209.fbl and the AVIC will accept that (finding the map 'name' in the file header) ?

As long as the files have the correct ending you can have the name be whatever you want. So, you could have UK2009.6map.fbl or UKmap.fbl or UnitedKingdom_map.fbl, and they would work. Same for other files as well.
Excellent , thanks for the help.
Can anyone describe the file layout on a storage device (USB/SD) and file format for importing POIs to the device? I know that splash screens go in a folder named "Pictures," is there a specific name for the folder where POIs will be found? I have no way to run AVIC Feeds software and am trying to import some custom points. POIFriend exports .kml files for the F- series but directs users to Feeds-SW to format them for use. I have GPSBabel+ but do not know which file format to export. Any help is appreciated.

With GPS Babel you can avoid the whole KML import and Avic Feeds limitations. Export in iGO's UPOI format and put them in UserData\iGO\Save folder.

Sorry to say I have not been able to make this work.
(USB:UserData\iGo\Save\points.upoi)
Device did not show any items in -->Destination Menu -->USB/SD -->from USB -->(0/0)

Not on USB, copy them directly to AVIC's internal drive. I've never tried importing UPOIs from an external device...
