I'm new to this forum and it is packed with alot of information. However I'm just starting and stuck on the basics.

I just installed an AVICF700bt and I'd like to find out how to back up the existing software.

I've spent a few days exploring these forums including:

"Backup your existing software" in the AVIC Wiki

"FAQ Hacks & Modification READ BEFORE POSTING"

"Hacks-Mods F-Series"

"Did you skip backing up your F90BT"

and more.

There does not seem to be a step by step, updated description of the process. Here are some examples of question s I have:

1. It's recommended to download the TestMode files. There seem to be two versions - Testmode.zip and TestMode-V2.3.RAR. Which one should I use? I downloaded Testmode_2.3.rar and tried to unzip it and it appears that cecmd under /utils is corrupted. All others unzipped okay. Even if that was okay, there is no equivalent of MiTiACAP as in the other TestMode.zip. Which one should be used and what should be put on the SD Card.

2. When the SD card is put into the AVIC and the vehicle is turned on ... Sometimes it is suggested that it will go right into the CE environment, and some places say that you need to click an X in the upper right screen. What is the correct procedure.

3. I assume that the next step is when the AVIC is in the Windows CE environment. Is that correct? In that case it is suggested to copy "My Flash Disk". Is this a folder that is already on the AVIC? Does this include ALL the firmware related files that are AVIC specific?

4. Is the only medium that these files can be copied to, the SD Card (Storage Card) or what happens if I connect a USB Flash Drive (stick) to the USB connection? Will that show up also?

5. Note that I have the reverse question also. If I have to "restore" the AVIC software (firmware), then do ALL the files just go to the "My Flash Disk" folder in the Windows CE system?

6. In both of 4 and 5 above - do these files include the MAP files?

7. Does one really have to "Calibrate" the screen before using the test environment (Windows CE??) ?

Sorry for all these questions, but it's really hard to find one place with this info. If I've just missed it please point me to it. Otherwise, if you can answer these here that would be great. If I've missed a potential step or three, then I'd like to know that too.

Thanks alot for all the info. (And by the way - I did get a red knob which fits and looks great. So now that I'm done with the outside, I'm ready for the inside.)

welcome to the forum,

1)download the testmode 2.3 and extract to your sd or you could download some pre-modded files which already has it, with the 2.3 version it doesn't go through the clicking of the part,

2)refer to 1)

3)myflashdisk has everything so that's the one you would want to copy

4)no, you could plug in a USB and transfer everything there though you still have to use an SD to go to testmode

5)yes

6)yes

7)not really

also, i'm assuming that the unit you bought still has the 2.0 version so just be aware of the mods as some of them are for 2.0 and some for 3.xxx,

have fun

Thanks alot ill.die.trying for the really quick response.

I think my unit has firmware version 1.0 - does that make a difference?

Also, when I un-rar the Testmode_v2.3.rar (using 7-Zip) I get the following error:

0 Data error in 'testmode\Utils\cecmd.exe'. File is broken.

Can you show me a link to the latest 2.3?

v1.0? never heard of it, here's what i would suggest,

1) go to this link http://www.4shared.com/file/136830571/b%20...%209_all.html so that is the mod that i created (it's for firmware 3.0) and extract it to your freshly formatted SD, it has the testmode

2) insert it to your unit and start your car

3) then you'll have access to testmode and then backup your myflashdisk,

4) don't copy anything from the SD to the flashdisk as it is for the 3.0 version

5) once you're done backing up i suggest you update your firmware to 3.0 by following this how to http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=25751

Can you repost that link? I just tried it and it came up invalid.

Thanks!

Thanks again ill.

If I go to Settings and Service info, I get Version: 1.001700. I'm guessing that's the firmware version.

So is it the case that the link you pointed to (which is for your v3 testmode) should also work in my case? Or are the different TestModes specific for different versions of the firmware?

I'm just going one step at a time - first I want to be sure I've backed things up properly before upgrading.

Just downloaded your files.

Thanks very much for this post! You've got some nice stuff in the files! I can't wait to see how they look.

Also I noticed that you've got different folders:

EU - Is that European Union?

MSN - don't know what that means?

No additional letters - Is that what I should use?

On the other hand, maybe all the testmode directories/files are the same, and is it the case that is (the testmode folder) the only set of files I'll need on the SD Card?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I think I'm almost there. :)
