OK am very new at this but my question is the following one, If I make a back up of Z1 with Acronis wouldn't I be able to restore it if anything goes wrong with the Z3 upgrade? Or do I need FF Repair Station?

You need to use repair station (~$45) to unlock the drive before your PC will see the drive for Acronis to back it up.

Repair Station (~$45) removes the password (unlocks) the drive and saves all data in tact.
HDD Unlock (~$5) removes the password (unlocks) the drive and DELETES EVERYTHING.
There is no way to 'backup" the drive if you use HDD Unlock. You can use HDD Unlock, if you do not want to make a backup. Please see the Hacks forum for more details.
