I have had my F700BT for a while and have been playing my MP3s from an SD card.

I would quite like to see the album art (which my MP3s all have attached already), and have the option of playlists and searching by genre, album etc etc that comes with connecting an Ipod. I would probably only use the Ipod in the car, so my question is which is the cheapest Ipod that works successfully with the F-series. Would an Ipod Shuffle, for example, give the same features and display information when connected to the F-series as a more expensive Ipod with a screen?

All of the current ipods except the shuffle will work with all of the Pioneer units. You would probably start with the nano and go from there.

I have a 160GB Classic, that leaves the car about once a month to sync and add songs. Wouldn't trade it for anything. A lotta music on there, and it integrates great with the F90.

you can also get an older used ipod for cheap online, the oldest Ipods that work are 5th gens(30gb &60gb IPod videos)

I suggest you check the list of supported iPods and their software versions. Pioneer doesn't support the newer ones, but does still support the "Classic" series.

I had a 5G iPod that worked great with my F700. The album art actually looked better than it does with my iPod Touch now. Every so often Buy.com has refurbished 5G iPods pretty cheap, around $100-$150 depending on capacity. For that price, you could almost afford to get one and just leave it hooked up.

The newest ipods should not be a problem to at least play music and video. However there may be a problem with charging some of the newest just released ipods.

I recommend the ipod classic for sure - my son's touch works however the album art is pixalated while mine looks perfect. It never leaves the car - only to sync. I've had 0 problems.
