I have an ipod classic 120gb, does this work with the D3? music mainly?

Also i bought a cheap ipod cable off ebay, will these work as well as the genuine pioneer ones, or should i expect problems?

I think your decision is right. It has some great features such as navigation, audio video, direct control and blue tooth capability.

Yes ipod will surely work with D3 but I advice to use good quality data cable instead of inferior quality and cheap one.It works smoothly without any problem.

There is only one iPod cable that will work on this unit. Info on that is in your manual.
