Good news is finally got my unit so I can start installing it soon. Wondering if anyone knows why a new box would carry such a dated build date 2-06? 
Possible Bad News is soft ware current 8 months?

My guess would be the price you paid and the source you bought the unit from. I've had my Z1 less than a month, though was shipped a 03/06 unit. I'm actually glad I have the pre- June model as there have been no software updates since the introduction. There's only been some limititations added from what I've been reading.

dont know what limitations you speak of, but its probably just old stock that was around that never sold.. until now.

My DVD that came with my D2 said Copyright 2006..

Because your unit was manufactured in 2006, and the discs were pressed in 2006. But to reitteate:
