my unit took a crap on me about two weeks ago. Pioneer took it back for repair under warranty. I was told the OS and all software would be reloaded and unit tested to see if that fixes it. The unit just no longer turned on. the splash screen came on then turned off after 10 seconds. The question...do you think it will come back with the latest firmware and map update???

probably not, the update isn't free.
I was afraid someone might say that. I should get it back mid week next week (Nov.17-18). I'll have to post what I get. I was hoping at least the firmware update. I can see maps having a cost but not firmware.
my bet is on it coming back with 2.xxx on it ], basically the latest pre 3.0 firmware

Unfortunately, despite the 3.0 firmware making the unit much more responsive and snappy as far as the touchscreen, Pioneer considers it an "optional" update that merely enables the new features of the mapping software. It's total crap, but they want your 120 bucks.
I got it back Friday. It had the latest old version 2.xxx. I was hopeful it would come back with the 3.0 and latest mapping. But, after install back into my Sierra I powered it up and started pushing function buttons and I got a windows looking screen that said "fatal error" for about 3 seconds and the unit rebooted. It did this 4 or 5 times. It did it after I pushed the menu button then settings. I did a reset myself by pushing the mini button top left. I called Pioneer and after 30 minutes of menu, buttons and hold time they told me I needed to send it back. I said that was crap that they had it for three weeks. They told me to hold for warranty to come on and talk to them maybe they would make some kind of deal with me about sending it back on their dime. I waited another 10 minutes and told my wife this is BS. I went back out to my truck and figured I try it one more time and if it failed I would try to reload the firmware they loaded on it before pulling the unit again. I had the sd from last June still on hand. Well, I don't know what happened but it is now working. Cross my fingers hope it holds out.
