Does the metal plate really help ? Or is it just so the magnet on the antenna will hold the antenna in place ![]()
GPS antenna
I'm not entirely sure what the purpose of the metal plate is aside from securing the movement of the receiver. My antenna sits atop a speaker in my dash corner and works fine, although my altitude is always off about 20-30 ft but location is spot-on.

Mine is localed my top of the dashboard on the drivers side with dubble sided tape, seems just to work just fine. Is there an altiminer on the display somewhere ? I have not noticed it. 3.0 update F90BT Thanks Jeff R.

I run the IDT skin/mod so it has an altimeter on the screen, but you'll also see one when looking at the sat signal in the navi/settings menu.
the metal piece is supposed to help with reception, nav and sat radio antenna's are designed to be mounted on a piece of metal of a certain minim size kinda like how the dish part of a DirecTV dish focuses the signal into the LNB and the metal sheet is for when you don't have it on a metal body panel. how important is it, not too important. the only time i use it is when i mount the antenna under the dash.
