Is it okay to have more that one DEM file?

For instance, I have recently updated to 2009.6 maps and I used the DEM file that came with it (NorthAmerica_low_2008_03_25.dem) I was using it for a while now. I also had some DEM files from my previous version (North_America.dem & UnitedStates.dem) and was wondering if I can use all three of these in conjunction with one another without any problems. If so, will I gain anything?

Thanx!

You could use multiple. It'll pick up the best one for your current location. You don't really need a lower-res one if you have a bigger one, though.

Thanx!

Now I have to hunt one down. DPDurst's download is currently unavailable and that is where I would grab one. Any other suggestions?

Thanx again, Boris.

Silly question, but I did not install the DEM files that came with the 2009.06 maps as they were over 100 mb in size. Is there any graphical difference in the two DEM files?

Here is a Dem file of US, Canada, and North America. Navteq 2009. Not sure how long the download will be there.

Enjoy.

Ok, that is 143 mb!! A lot of us that mod, dont have that space or it will be pushing the space in a corner. Again, What is the advantage of having a 143 mb DEM file over a 32 mb DEM file. Is there ANY visual difference? Also too, be careful because that DEM file is NAVTEQ , NOT TeleAtlas which is on our AVIC's

There are 3 files in the download US, North America and Canada and it doesn't make any difference what brand they are. You can use a Navteq and Teleatlas together. I have both on my unit.

Ok, but for 143 mb, why put it on your unit? That is a lot of space for no advantage, or is there an advantage? I think that a lot of people (myself included) dont really know what a DEM file does and we want to know if it is beneficial before we put a 143 mb file in that hogs space.

I stand corrected!!!! The DEM file that comes with the 2009.06 maps is 176 MB IN SIZE. I better get realistic terrain for that size!! To put a file that size in, I have to delete a lot of maps, So AGAIN, is it worth it?????

I have used both brands and really couldn't tell much of a difference. I only put the DL on there in case someone else may want it and you really don't have to use all of the files. The US is the biggest at 115MB and the others are smaller.

You could mix and match to see what works better.

Right now I am using the 2008.03 map DEM file which is very small ( I think 30 mb) because I did not have enough space for the one that came with the 2009.06 file. Is it worthwhile to delete a few maps that I dont use and install the larger DEM file that came with the 2009.06 maps? Will I notice a difference between a 30 mb DEM file and a 176 mb DEM file?

I found this quote on gpsunderground about the dem files....

(The files need to be copied in /content/dem folder on IGO8. These files are big, all together are more than 1 GB, but if you don't need all of them you can keep the one for your area. If space is a problem, you can run the software without them, it will run but you will not see any terrain features.)

(As a note, do not expect every small hills and valleys to be visible, the terrain is not so detailed, but if you drive in an area with bigger hills and mountains it will be clearly visible. You may need to set your tilt properly (if you see a little sky you should be able to properly see terrain also).

You will probably see more terrain with the bigger file. I deleted canada and most of the western states and I have plenty of space. So you could try it and see if it makes a difference for you.

I live in Canada, so it won't make much difference seeing that it is only a 32 mb file regardless. Thanks for your help in this

I dunno if the DEM file that came with the 2009.6 IS a hi res file. The name implies it is a low res (NorthAmerica_low_2008_03_25.dem) and dated 3/25/08..is this really for a 2009 map? Yet, it is 181,238 KB in size so what gives??

Please, for Europe there is a greater dem File available?

Go to gpsunderground. There should be all that you need there.

Good question. I believe I DL this a few months ago from a link somwhere on here and I thought it was a 2009 file. Boris may be able to shine a little light on this.

DEM files are independent of maps, although newer ones are probably more accurate. In any case, I would not expect to see much terrain unless you are driving through the Rockies (Alps) etc.
