I'm new to the Avic world, so forgive my lack of knowledge...

My goal is to purchase a D1 or D2, XM or Sirius tuner, and installation for $1000 or less. (And of course do the mod for nav to be usable while driving.)

As I understand, the only real difference between the D1 and D2 is the navigation maps and software. Is there any difference in sound quality or stereo function. I read the D1 only has 2v preouts; seems kind of ridiculous for such an expensive unit.

It seems like it might be less expensive to purchase a D1 and the newest nav dvd seperately than buying a D2? Any suggestions or comments or ideas where to buy from? thanks!

Welcome to the site. Most if not all of your questions can be easily answered by the search button. To answer 1 for you though. There is no difference between a d1 and d2 if you upgrade the d1 with the newest map software.

Thanks. One more question: I read on an eBay auction for the new navigation software (CNDV-60MP) that it does not " change the XM Radio or iPod Interfaces." Is the D2 XM interface upgraded over the D1?

Anybody have any comments/suggestions on buying a factory refurbished D1?

Don't think the xm interface is any different between the 2. If it is then it's just a software issue which would be taken care of when upgrading the d1 to the 60 series maps.
