I've searched the forum multiple times /ways and, although I found many posts that indicate downgrading the firmware to a prior version will enable video played via the ipod, was wondering if a composite cable with a new ipod classic (without messing with the firmware) would work as well. Trying to remember the back of the D3...

Yes but you will not get any control on the D3 screen for any functions of the ipod without using the dedicated CD-I200 ipod cable. The composite cable will need to be connected through the AV1 input and all control will need to be done form the ipod itself.
