Alright...so i'm coming from an avic d2 where you could run a wire from the open spot in the harness to get 100% access of the unit while driving. Now i've ordered a z1 and i can't decipher what all this is. I have a brand new xterra...will i need to run the speed sensor and everything, or can i just hook it up normally *except for the speed sensor* and flash the headlights in the startup screen? I'm asking because it seemed too good to be true when the d2 cheat came out...this seems more complicated. Is it really just a matter of flashing the headlights on startup??? (i hope!)

Just make sure the ILL wire is hooked up - you'll need this for the headlight trick to work. The headlight trick does, in fact, work. I have the bypass that's being sold on this forum, and it works as well. Also, you can leave the ebreak wire floating if you like. Do a search on for more info on the floating ebrake wire. Hope this helps.

I came across these directions for by-passing security features on the Z1... I hope this helps...

Emergency Brake By-Pass For Pioneer AVIC-Z1

Here are the steps:

1. Make sure your system is “properly” installed (from a wiring aspect, dimmer wire connected to the headlights)

2. Make sure your emergency brake is in the “off” position

3. Your radio must be in an operational mode other than DVD (i.e., XM, SIRIS or radio) when you start the car. If the DVD player is in the operation mode, the unit will engage and the bypass will not work

4. When the Z1 is starting, flick the lights on and off 3 times before the unit becomes operational (prior to audio playing through the Z1); otherwise, the bypass won’t work.

5. Afterwards, check the navigational menus to verify all commands are operational. That’s it. Happy DVD’ing!

Emergency Brake By-Pass For Pioneer AVIC-N3
Here are the steps:

Note: The AVIC-N3 is just a toggle switch in back of the head-unit hidden beneath a silver “void warranty” sticker

1. Pull the sticker back and slide the toggle switch over

2. Ground the light green parking brake wire (ground to the car chassis or the black ground wire for the radio system)

Note: Obviously, the warranty will be voided on the AVIC-N3 (as soldering the two pins on the AVIC- N2)

3. Afterwards, check the navigational menus to verify all commands are operational. That’s it. Happy DVD’ing!

Couple things, #3, is not necessary, it will happen no matter what it's set to.

#4, technically all you need is one change from light off to lights on or lights on to lights off that occurs between 5 and 7.5 seconds after you turn the car on. The screen will say "Starting pioneer navigation" around this time. You can flash your lights 3 times, but it's unnecessary. All you need to do it turn them on at the right time, or start the car and turn the lights on immediately, then when the screen says "Starting pioneer navigation" turn them off.

I also sell a little circuit to install which will do this automatically:
