What all do I need to do to upgrade it i'm going on vacation in April and I need it at top condition. I'm just really worried about bricking it again. The last time I had to sent it off because I got into the service menu and it never turned back on.

You could always buy the official update.

For the map or the unit as a whole? and when you update the map it does not update the rest of the unit does it?

The map and software updates are bundled together.
