I bought a refurbished d1 last month installed it an it was fine. 2 days later it went out. I had no sound at all. Everything else was perfect. I sent it back to Pioneer and they said nothing was wrong. I had the unit professionally installed and he has done numerous tests on it. Please help! Pioneer sent the unit back and it still doesn't work.
No Sound at all in D1!!
What year make model of the vehicle it's installed in? Is there any other aftermarket equipment in the vehicle (amps, speakers, etc)
a speaker can shut down a head unit if it is shorted out
I have a 99 4runner with boston acoustic speaker
Yeah, check out each speaker, make sure non of them show ground when NOT connected to the head unit. Unless they are going through an amp.
we hooked it to a test speaker, and it still didn't work
where any other speakers connected at the time? where any of them touching each other or other conductive surface?
not that i am aware of, and is the beep mande when the volume goes up supposed to come for the speakers or the unit?
Disconnect all of the speakers from the avic. Then hook a test speaker up to each of the speaker outputs of the avic one by one. That will verify that the avic is indead outputting sound. Then one at a time hook the avic back up to the speakers in the truck. Testing after hooking each one up. If any speaker doesn't make sound when hooked up to the avic, then you'll need to check and make sure the speaker terminals aren't shorting to the metal in the door and that the offending speaker is not blown or damaged.
theres a beep from speakers, but do as cntrylvr said, thats the best way to ensure your speakers are good.
Could there be any explanation to why it worked perfectly then all of a sudden went out? THe speakers couldn't have been blown b/c i didn't turn it to loud.
Most speakers are not blown due to too much power, but dirty signal. so, if you sent a dirty signal to it that would be enough to distort it and cause damage... or if a terminal on the speaker moved and came in contact with the body of the car, or popped off and touched metal where it rests are all ways that this could have happened... so just check it to be sure
thanks for the info.

Can't forget about the thing jeep cherokees are famous for. The speaker wire in the doors corrodes to the point that it causes the speaker to stop working.
yep yep
Just fixed a '91 Cherokee last week with that problem.
homedog329, any joy fixing that problem?
I have the same issue with my N1 (a day or two after installing the latest software). All sound went dead, but no beeps or even static. Nothing out of the RCA outputs either. I've used a multimeter to check for shorts to ground or +12V on the speakers and they are OK. I've also measured the resistance across the terminals on the plug for each set of speakers to check if they had blown (no problem... 3-4 Ohms each).
I haven't yet disconnected the speaker cables and connected an external speaker, but that's my next job. I don't really want to try downgrading the software just yet, in case that causes further problems.
There is a company advertising on ebay to fix N1's with this problem (the same company that I got a replacement ribbon cable from, so I believe that they know what they are doing), but I don't want to spend yet another $70 + delivery costs. This, and the fact that I've seen a few people posting this problem, leads me to think that it could be the N1 its self.
Any advice appreciated!
Thanks
Try unhooking all speaker leads from the N-1 and using a test speaker. Then get back to us.
OK, I've disconnected all speaker cables and connected an external speaker directly to one of the front outputs. Still no sound from the speaker. I've also tried to get sound from the pre-outs, but again nothing.
Any ideas? I'm going nuts...
Thanks!
Did you bypass the unit and forget to move the mute wire?
I'm not quite sure what you mean. The cellular mute wire is not connected to anything, which is what the service manual says to do if you don't have a cell phone to connect it to (admittedly, manuals aren't always correct...)
As far as bypassing goes, I don't know if there is an internal amp in my 4Runner to bypass. The N1 was originally installed by a professional installer and it worked for over a year. I had to take it out to replace the ribbon cable and it then worked for a day or so before the sound going (although i did notice that there was some static whenever the voice alerts came on). So, it's possible that something isn't connected correctly, but I can't figure out what that would be.
All I can think is that the amplifier stage has blown, but it's next to impossible for me to have it running while opened up so that I test the signals on the pins (even though I have a circuit diagram), since getting the brain and the connecting wire out of the car is a major deconstruction job... Plus I don't have an oscilloscope or the test DVD.
I was just hoping someone could point to something simple like a fuse or wrong wiring, before I send it in for repair.
Thanks
Sound like a possibility, send it out for service.
