Can anyone tell me why all of the instructions for custom background images say that you must replace the original Nav DVD if you used a SL DVD? I burned a SL DVD, changed my images & left the burned DVD in the unit. Everything seems to be functioning properly. Am I missing any features?

It depends on which files you deleted. It's possible that the area you travel in, the information is still on your single layer dvd.
