Hey, great forum nice to find it! Helped me choose the AVIC-F. I went for the F9110BT which is made to look OEM in a VW

So anyway, is it supposed to have a compass because it doesn't seem to know which way I'm facing if stationary

well the units use GPS to track where they are, and since the radio doesn't know which way the antenna is pointing because every install is different, it has trouble telling witch direction is which when sitting still, once you start moving, no matter how slow, it can track your direction very easy.
