Opinions please! Keep the D2 or hold out for the D3?

Hate to make my first post a cry for help, but I'm having a tough time making this decision. I've been lurking for awhile, (great site and tons of good stuff here, MANY thanks) and after soaking up a lot of info, recently picked up a D2, backup cam, Ipod interface and 4GB Nano for my F-350. I took the Crutchfield deal, $1200 with free cam & $200 gift which I used for the Nano and interface. I figured when you break it down with the freebies, even by ebay prices it only put the D2 at $850 or so. Plus I got the standard issue install stuff and an honest warranty unlike some of the "take your chances" places. I haven't touched the D2 yet and still have a few days left if I want to send it all back. I've found a few places listing the D3 for as low as $799 when it becomes available, which certainly leaves me enough cash left to pick up the cam, cable and Ipod without spending more than I have in the D2.

I'm looking for opinions here. My biggest concern is bypass issues. Does anyone have any speculation on the ability to bypass the D3? I don't need DVD capability, (overhead unit going in) but the Ipod/interface updates and rotary volume really caught my attention. Does anyone know if the maps/POI's will be updated? It would suck to have to buy disks for a brand new D2 if they are updated on the D3.

Any thoughts/opinions will be greatly appreciated. Help me out! I don't want to send this thing back and regret it.

Sort of a personal choice for you but I thought I would at least throw in that the D3 will have updated maps over the D2. Pioneer typically releases a new one every year

I'd hold onto the D2. The D3 has a smaller screen, and just a single dvd/cd drive. You'll have to pull a cd/dvd out and insert the navi dvd to plot a route for navigation. I do like the look of the D3 better though.

The D3 also doesn't seem to have a tilt screen feature nor a motorized screen. In my opinion the D3 will be cheaper than D2 due to all the hardware cost reductions. However it will have the 07 maps and have a better software interface for ipod/bluetooth. As for bypass, we probably won't know until these hit the market. But w/ the ability to play DVD's Pioneer may make it harder.

In my opinion, I'd hold out. Once D3's hit, they'll be plenty of cheaper D1/D2 on ebay. I picked up a D1 w/ XM mod for $528 shipped, and another remanufactured D1 for $590 shipped. Both work great.

Thanks for your thoughts, keep em coming. Bypass is my biggest concern. No mysteries with the D2. The tilt issue and slightly smaller screen don't bother me. The placement in an F-350 is nice and high so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll have an overhead DVD going in so that source is covered. I'm really looking to utilize the Ipod as a "changer" so I keep thinking the 3 will be superior here even without the double drive. I also love the rotary volume and screen color options although these don't seem that important. Map updates would be a big thing too. I don't have sat. radio so that doesn't steer me either way.

I'd just sit on this D2 until the 3 was out, but by then the 2 will probably only be worth $400 NIB!

If ipod functionality is important to you, send back the D2 and ipod adaptor and wait for the D3. From the thread showing the D3 at Sema, it appears the D3 will be worlds better in the ipod department

I would hold out, I have Z1 and I'm thinking of going to D3 sad that Z series is supposed to be the flagship and they are putting nicer features on other models Yeah its missing the HD but figure this the Z series $1400-$2000 depending on where you get it. D3-$1000.00, Pioneer Half Din DVD-CD Changer 500.00, Ipod $300.00 you have a unit with better Ipod controls, button lighting control, the HD for saving music on the Z is a waste of time and space, and you have a 6 disc dvd changer rather than single for less money. The only Negative's to this scenario that I can see is DVD navigation a Little slower than HD prob not even noticible havent really been able to tell a diff from my N1 and my z1 and the smaller screen, nice thing about the screen no parts in motion to break. I think the Z1 will be sold and I'm going with this set up.

The six disk dvd player is actually single din, so you would really need three din size slots for your setup. Still awesome if you have the room though, I can't wait for the D3 to upgrade the ipod and bluetooth of mine

I think it is a matter of preference. I am personally holding out for the D3. The ipod controls, dvd playback, and ability to change button colors are very important to me. The single disc slot does suck but I rarely ever listen to normal cds so I'll end up just leaving the navi disc in the slot. The screen is smaller but not that much that it bothers me. I think I might like the motorized screen that the D2 has but I am very nervous about something like that breaking down. So my vote is wait for the D3 :D

I sold my N3 to get a D3 the moment my local retailer gets one in stock. :)

Well, now that the rest of the specs are up on Pioneer's website It's a no brainer. The D2 is going back to Crutchfield. I had secured my return authorization which is open till the 14th of Feb, so unless someone wants to pay me $850 for a NIB D2 (foolish I would say!) it's history. I was glad to see the audio system controls remained the same and was surprised to see the vehicle dynamics are intact, improved too with what looks to be additional guage options.

I'm anxious now, hope these things hit sooner than expected.

Only question left for me is BYPASS? Hope it is as easy as the D2.

Thanks again for all the input.

Yeah, I hope the bypass is simple as well, but I'm guessing that it will be at least somewhat different than the D1/D2.

I'm guesing something more along the lines of the Z, but who knows. I'm sure they will come up with something tricky. :(

I was thinking the same exact thing, probably more like the Z1... But who knows, maybe they will get lazy and keep it the same, I'm optimistic... :)
