I drive for work right now and it kills me when the unit takes over a minute to start up!
Is this normal?

yes, depending on which firmware you are running, 45-60 seconds, is not un-commom for full boot up (playing music off of SD can take longer)
if listing to radio or XM, the music should start playing long before the unit is fully booted
