I have an iphone 3gs, and the pioneer cable seems to fall out easily. It works fine on my ipod. Do I have a defective cable, or do I need to do something like use tape. I want to be able to use apps, otherwise I'm fine bt streaming from the phone or connecting the ipod.

Does your iPhone have a protective case? I had to shave a little of the case away from my iTouch so that the 30-pin connector would seat and lock correctly. First, try it without the case to see if that is the problem.

Where did you buy the cable?

falls out even with the case off. I got the cable from amazon, it is pioneer, not a knock off.

Well, if it works fine with the iPod, but not the iPhone, I'd say it's not the cable causing the problem. Can you try someone else's iPhone? Yours may be damaged.
