Hey

Has anyone purchased the motionx gps drive External Display Package at $24.99.

Is it worth it?

Posted Mar 06, 2012 · 07:27 UTC#2

Not needed for the appradio, we already have native 2 way touch..

Great answer maccrap, but if you did a little research you would notice it is the WRONG answer.

When you fire up motionx and it is connected to an AppRadio it tells you that you have to have the external display package due to "licensing" which is total bullshit since no other apps seem to need this licensing

Posted May 17, 2012 · 23:30 UTC#4

There are other apps that require an additional install for external display for the same reason.

I've never had a problem with motionx... I'm currently using appradio+ vers 2.5 and appradio extensions current beta. No licensing notice has ever appeared... I installed my appradio the week my local bestbuy received the first shipment.. So I'm assuming my unit is from the first batch. Again it worked the day I installed it which was long before my phone was jailbroken, or appradio + was around.

Well I have Nav Free installed and it does not require any additional license, Extra Mile also does not need an additional license, Waze? nope, no additional license there, Inrix Traffic also does not ask me to purchase a license to display on the AppRadio, Livio Radio is another example of an app that does not require additional license to use external display, Dash Command is a $50 app, if it asks for an additional $25 to license it they will put themselves out of business, RDIO works without paying anything extra.... I haven't had Mixtrax or CarMediaPlay ask for any money to use them either, and even Aupeo works without an additional charge for an external display license.

I guess that leaves StreamS and BestParking that I have not tried yet, I'd be surprised if they ask for additional license fees.

Sooo VBLUE42, can you tell me what other apps require this license because I believe I just listed every app available for iPhone and Android.

Well Nerds 2 You, Pioneer is not the only company that has a unit that has this capability so you haven't named every app. And I never said anything about "licensing" in my response although my choice of words could be construed that way.

I have the external display package and is not worth it period. The only 2 way touch it gives you is the ability to change between 3d maps or 2d maps. There is no other functionality. you must control everything from the iphone

I have the motionx app on an original AppRadio, and I do not need to pay to be allowed to manipulate the main screen. Even if I did, the main screen is pretty bare. No need to really touch it.

Sorry, I though this was a Pioneer AppRadio thread, I didn't realize we were discussing products from other manufacturers.

It really doesn't matter what you call it, licensing, in app option, display package, or anything else it is still an extra charge to do something that others do for free, and to claim that is due to licensing issues is clearly a lie by the makers of MotionX.

I still don't understand, I HAVE NOT purchased the external display option. I can, however, change from 2d to 3d maps right from my head unit. So what is the need to buy this "extra"?

Posted May 20, 2012 · 00:26 UTC#12

You do not have to buy the display out for AppRadio 1. I did and it messed everything up. Apple refunded me.

Just for reference I have a Z140BH and you do require to purchase the add on to get the touch screen functionality. I think its total BS, because it really doesn't give you much more. Seeing that full offline style GPS software like Garmin and Tom Tom are not much more expensive it seems like a bit of a cheap shot on Motion X's part. Of couse if you jailbreak your phone you can use any GPS program on the HU but without touch ability.

I think AppRadio 2 needs the external display option and the original does not.

It works on APPRADIO3. For me the deal killers are no hybrid maps during nav and the monthly model.

I'll stick with my NUVI.

I purchased the license maybe a year ago. I wanted to gain the touch screen functions. It was worth it at the time for me because the AppRadio2 was already so much cheaper than a head unit with built-in nav. I think I paid $29 for it and to me that was OK. It's all in how you rationalize it. The unfortunate thing is that you still have to use your phone to type anything in. There is no pop-up keyboard on the big screen. That was a bummer.

I've since switched to waze, which is absolutely free. I got used to the cartoon-like appearance and I actually really like the hazard, police, etc. alerts is gives you. MotionX is still installed, but I almost never use it.

Posted Jul 19, 2013 · 09:43 UTC#17

i couldnt get past waze freezing up, not sharing to facebook, becoming unresponsive, freezing up again, ect ect

Posted Jul 20, 2013 · 20:24 UTC#18

Does anyone have an iPhone 5 using this?  Can you get 2 way touch?  on my appradio 3 it looks like you can't interact with the HU to use Waze so I was wondering if paying for the external display/interaction works with iPhone 5 or not.

Posted Jul 20, 2013 · 20:32 UTC#19

I had it working until it too me to an In N Out that was not there.

I am back to my 7" NUVI.

Waze is nice in that it's coded to use an external display. Waze is not nice in that it now shows popup ads on half the screen along your route. atrocious. probably surprising since it's now owned by an advertising company (google).

I'm just using my 7" NUVI. It frees the APPRADIO3 to run music, check email and other pursuits.

not a great solution for me -- i got onboard w/ AR in order to have one device to do both music and nav. still trying to figure out from pioneer how AR3 is supposed provide voice guidance in Apple Maps, as it purports to do on their site.

Posted Jul 25, 2013 · 20:08 UTC#23

If you look at the print it doesn't say specifically it provides voice for Apple Maps. It only says it provides voice for maps in another sentence. One could say that is technically true sense you do get voice with other map apps. The Apple Maps app in its current state with iOS has no coding to output audio from any output other then the iDevices speaker so this wont be possible unit Apple changes it. However I do agree with you that Pioneer's wording is misleading. Look into AppEx and use Google Maps instead and be done with the issues.

incorrect -- on this main AR3 product page Pioneer does indeed say it provides voice guidance for all choices:

You also have the option of using the built-in Google® Maps on Android devices and Apple Maps on the iOS platform. With all of these choices including voice guidance and on-screen control of maps, AppRadio really knows navigation and gives you more ways to get to where you are going.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/AppRadio/AppRadio+3+(SPH-DA210)

...there is no mistake: theyre saying right there that it supports voice guidance on Apple Maps. however, the actual device does not. ive since gotten a response from Pioneer support confirming there is no voice guidance or onscreen control of Apple Maps, which they of course blame on apple, saying the app changed. however, Apple Maps came out 9 months ago, the AR3 came out 1 month ago...clearly here the culprit is Pioneer for having a brand new product website with bogus claims on it. (perhaps not surprising for a website clueless enough to have HTML <b> tags within their <title> tags...but i digress.)

shame on pioneer. again.

The problem in this case is indeed Apple. As I said, Apple maps at this point in the current version of iOS does not output audio to any output other then the iDevice speaker.
