when I insert a movie and the main movie menu comes up I push play and it gives me the red circle/ slash thingy. after I push it repeatedly and then hit the menu button it plays, sometimes I have to go to the chapter selection. am I doing something wrong?

It does that during the warnings and sometimes previews for certain movies

ive noticed that too. The best thing to do, once you get to the main menu, just push the 4 way arrow button, it will switch screens, then press enter.

I just wonder why it's like that, seems like something was wrong but makes me feel better to know it's not just mine.

The N1 is same way... Play does absolutely nothing. Some other home DVD players are like that, Play/Enter are different functions.
