Just bought my 940BT and it has a vechicle speed sensor wire to be hooked up. I have a 97 Honda accord and does the nav need this to work

Nope, the nav will still work fine without the speed sensor.

The speed sensor becomes extremely useful when in a city or tunnel where the nav can use it to estimate where you are better than using just the built in gyros. If you don't plan on being in a lot of tunnels or downtown NYC then leaving the speed sensor wire disconnected is fine.
