I am a newbie to this forum. I expect delivery shortly on a fully loaded 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS. The dealer screwed up and the car coming doesn't have the nav system. I can either wait a couple of more weeks for a car with factory installed navigation or he will give me the same car w/o navigation and allow me nearly $2000 toward the installation of an aftermarket nav system of my choosing. The Mitsu system is a 30GB hard drive with 6GB reserved for personal music. The maps come from Navteq. The system includes Bluetooth, and connections for Satellite radio (Sirius), Ipod or similar,built-in microphone. It has a 7" monitor and I think it plays the same array of formats as the Z1. The car has to be in Park to play a DVD. My question: Forgetting about the few hundred $ extra I will have to fork over for a complete and installed Z1, do you guys think a Z1 is sufficiently superior to the OEM (I don't know who manufactures it) to warrant opting for the aftermarket system?

Get a Z1, the optional add ons like XM, Sirus, TV Tuner, Backup Camera, DVD Changer, CD changer, Ipod integration etc are worth the upgrade.

However, I hear that the Z1 will be hard to find right now. If there are any even available. You may have to wait for the Z2 to come out.

First off, thanks for buying a Mitsubishi.I personally own 2 3000gts and love them.

But to answer your question... If you are going to wait a couple weeks, why not get the Z2? It will have updated maps for the year 2007 (z1 has 2006), and other misc. software updates, and more accurate navigation

To compare the Z1 to the factory nav

1) Z1 offers you 10 GB of music space (not in mp3 format. it can only rip wav files)

2) you could bypass the dvd function so that you do not need to be in park

3)it also has a 7'' monitor (but it is not removable so you have to watch out for theft)

4) the Z1 has bluetooth xm/sirius as an optional accessory. Each run about 100 for each unit. You could also buy xm navtraffic for live traffic updates in 20 different major cities.

5) Z1 has 11 million points of interest

Some extra info on the Z2

The AVIC-Z2 in-car navigation system, announced Sunday, utilizes the newly released Tele Atlas MultiNet database, which includes detailed address data for 45 million addresses in the US . Via its proprietary GPS and built-in gyrosensor, the device should be able to precisely navigate directly to the destination desired, the company said. The AVIC-Z1, its predecessor, could only find blocks of addresses, and would then interpolate the location of the destination address through a form of estimation within the block, according to Pioneer.

I believe the Z1/Z2 uses its own compression scheme, so you should be able to fit more than 10 GB of wav files worth.
