Maybe a bit off topic, maybe not....

I'm still looking for a Z1 cover of some type, but was also wondering what type of alarms are the best on the market right now? Anybody have experience in what is working best these days, brand and feature wise?

Thanks!

most of the alarms are made by the same company, if not within the same warehouse type of deal. Dei has a large portion of the market with brands such as Clifford, Dei, hornet, viper, Avital and the list goes on. Audiovox has a good portion of the market as well, with brands such as Prestige, Audiovox, Code Alar, and more. They all are pretty much the same as far as connections go. You will get people to say "I like such and such better" but with things like the fcc and the restrictions placed on transmitters and the functionality of the units themselves, you really dont get any huge differences. Pretty much all alarms have a lifetime warranty.

With that said, I use Audiovox, Code alarms myself. I like The functionality. I like the remotes, they dont seem as cheesy to me as say the viper stuff. Theres really nothing you can do for the real thieves. But you can keep the honest ones out/away from your car as best you can. Things to annoy the criminal such as extra sirens, motion sensors, and blinking l.e.d.'s can help deter. Personally though, I like a nice clean, non noisy, non false alarming, system. I actually go as far as not installing led's and using the factory horn instead of the siren. Then again, I make sure that I am comfortable where and when I leave my vehicles.

There are some accessories like a pager system, or even tracking systems that you can view on line, in fact theres some neat features like emailing you or paging you when your vehicle has moved, or is speeding, or or or.. its pretty much endless what you can do, just got to figure out what you want from the system.

Hmmm, okay, I'll look around at some of the specs and features. I have the Ford alarm, which is pretty sensitive, as if I even bump the side mirror, it goes off. I also already have lojac, but that does me no good on a smash and grab.

I'm trying to figure out if it's woth the $$$$??

the short answer, Id say no its not worth the $$$. But if you want some false sense of security and have some $$$ to spare, it doesnt hurt.

This is kinda what I figured. How about completely black tinted windows. I just have to pay off the cops in the area not to ticket me..

I went to a scrap yard and got an old double-din stock radio ('97 Ford). I pried the face off, melted the plastic sticking out in the back, glued the volume button and cassette door on. Cover fits perfectly over the AVIC. I'm hoping that it at least fools the "glancers."

The trick with alarms is they are only as good as the install. I can't tell you the number of times I popped out a window and disabled an alarm in less than a minute....

Crappy alarm + Flawless install 1000x better than Be all end all alarm with crappy install.

im a local installer and people are almost right the alarm is as good as the installer you want reliability when it comes to alarms and any d.e.i product other than some of the cliffords are reliable i would stay with a viper 2 way alarm they can go up to 1 mile range and since you have a truck i would strongly reccomend a back up battery for your alarm check the 2 links for info on both

Yes it is as long as the installer wires it up correctly. Which more than a few don't, but that's a completely different subject.
