hey guys, i been looking for the z1 for a while now, and i sorta gave up and thought, shoot, i might as well just wait for the z2. however, everytime i check ebay 9which seems to be the only place to get them now) i see refurbished z1's. they are power sellers with high feedback and overall they seem like quality sellers. i was wondering what you guys think about getting a refurbished product.

the price for them is 1500. any info would be great. thanks.

I personally feel thats not a smart move. Unless its a well known friend or some sort.

Such an expensive unit especially with a hard disk drive should be purchased from a well known pioneer seller/dealer.

So ABESOFMAINE.com don't have any in stock?

Thats where ducatiboy got one of his units and so did I for about 1500 new.

my broke friend bought a refurb D2 from ebay. It still works after 3 months. It is still a risk with refurbs though. I have never had any luck with refurbs. They work fine for a couple months then die.

are there any things i should ask the seller in particular? any points to make?

Posted Feb 26, 2007 · 01:28 UTC#5

You probably want to ask them what type of warranties they offer. Also, dont buy into the fact that they say pioneer gives you a 1 year warranty. This is not true!!!! Especially if you buy it from ebay.

In addition, if possible, find out what kind of defects the unit has. which i doubt he will be able to tell you.

If its factory refurbished from pioneer, it will probably be fine. It will have a 90 day warranty so that should be long enough to test it for problems.

I've never had any problems with Pioneer refurbs either

Yah, factory refurb units did have a problem at one time, or they might just have been returned and couldn't be sold as new. But think of it this way, every Z1 that gets shipped I promise you is never turned on. It's assembled and shipped. It's never really tested before shipped cause it's cheaper to ship untested units and deal with the returns than test every single device. At least the refurb units have had a tech go over them and make sure they work.

so i'm assuming the general consensus is that it's ok?

how does the price look to you guys?

should i just hold out for the z2?

Posted Feb 26, 2007 · 03:16 UTC#10

hold out for a Z2. The unit is new, and you get the 250 dollar software update for free! Thats 1750 right there for your refurb Z1. Wouldnt you rather have a brand new unit for a little less than 2k?

Posted Feb 26, 2007 · 03:18 UTC#11

well isn't the z2 msrp 2200?

if that is the case, wudn't the z1 be the better choice?

do you really think the z2 will be out for less than 1900?

Posted Feb 26, 2007 · 03:19 UTC#12

i got my Z1 for 1500 when the MSRP for the Z1 unit was 2250. If you dont buy if from an authorized dealer, you get it at wholesale price. The thing is that you dont get the 1 year pioneer warranty. Is 750 dollars really worth a worthless 1 year warranty that makes you ship it to their factory at your cost?

Posted Feb 26, 2007 · 03:22 UTC#13

what do you think the z2 will go for then?

Posted Feb 26, 2007 · 03:25 UTC#14

supplies will probably be short for the first couple weeks the Z2 is released. So they probably will sell for MSRP, even at unathorized places.Wait 1 or 2 months and prices are sure to drop significantly at UNATHORIZED places only.

So if you buy a new Z1 from an unauthorized dealer you lose the 1 year warranty. The refurb offers a 90 day warranty. Does this mean the refurb has to be sold by an authorized dealer also for the warranty?

Yep

Just spoke to Pioneer! You have no warranty if you buy new or refurbished avic-z1 UNLESS its an authorized dealer from Pioneers website!!

Even though they say that, people here have reported that they have gotten free warranty work through pioneer buying the unit used on ebay or whatever. Even back in the beginning, Pioneer said they would only have a warranty through factory authorized dealers, but in the past they have still honored the warranty. But that policy might not continue forever.

I found this site. Still don't know about buying a refurbished... but if you're trying to save a buck...

I don't know how legit they are. but the reviews for the site seem to go both ways. though they do have a few good reviews. So, I guess it's up to you my friend.
