Finally got my 8000 today and man am I happy! One thing I didn't expect to work was Siri hands free but it works seamlessly. Just setup Bluetooth and it works. But the real bonus is I programmed my Axxess for a PTT button (my car doesn't have one), and although all the information I could find said pioneer doesn't support that button, it activates Siri!

Everyone was right about appmode though. Used it for about 3 minutes and I hate it! C'mon carplay! HDMI out from the iPhone works pretty great though!

hdmi works but crappy quality. i hate it. but add a xbox, wii u or xbox 1, ps3 or 4. looks amazing

Hdmi quality was fine on my iphone. The menus don't look great, but the main reason for using it would be for streaming video, and that still looked great.

Anyone find any cool tricks you can get Siri to do in the car? I tried to ask her to change functions on the radio, hoping they had found some way to get the phone to communicate back to the receiver like a remote, but no dice. Also, if I ask what someone's age is, she'll read the beginning of their Wikipedia entry, but if I ask her to tell me about someone, she'll say she can't do that while driving.

I wouldn't say never!  With Car Play only a few weeks away, give it 6 months and I am sure it would be integrated.

You're saying this without any basis. If Apple was to release an open API for Siri, Pioneer or idatalink etc could integrate stereo control in an app.

Exactly. There's no technical reason why it couldn't be done. Data is flowing between the phone and the radio. The radio just has to convert some of that data into commands.

The ratio of users of Apple products being used with a Pioneer stereo is so neglegiable to the overall users of Apple products that we shouldnt even be having this conversation. If you really think Apple gives a damn about a few people wanting to control thier stereo with thier phone you not only dontget the whole purpose of Car Play which is to control the phone from the head unit, but you also dont get what Apple is about here. It will never happen.

It's an emerging market, so we will see. Apple is too tight so I don't see it either but I can see the jailbreak community coming up with ways

Just because you think it won't happen is irrelevant because you, frankly, have no basis for your conclusion. Apple could easily release an open API for Siri -- many people expect it will. And, yes, Apple is very controlling and may make it nearly impossible, not unlike the current limitations for AppleTV, but you have zero support that it will never happen.

I see Pioneer more likely being the ones to release an app for Car Play that lets Siri do all those things with all the new APIs Apple released on June 2nd. (I hope they improve the apps they make)

Apple tends to only control hardware they make or companies that pay a lot of money to be certified by Apple. (Pioneer / Alpine)

It has nothing to do with Apple, or very little. It has to do with Pioneer and what they want to develop. There may already be clever ways to do it using existing hooks...I haven't dug into the API's to tell you.

Sony has created a control app sure, but that's not integrated with Siri or CarPlay.

Apple has demonstrated at WWDC that while they are more willing to allow integration than in the past, it is still going to be on their terms. That means APIs for specific tasks, much like CarPlay's API where you give it access to your app's audio files, rather and presenting UI. So Apple would need to provide a generic Siri API (doesn't seem likely if they are doing task-focused things), or actually care about this scenario enough to do something about it, which makes no sense to me.

iHeartRadio is a launch partner for CarPlay. Add support for something like TuneIn, and you have local FM/AM pretty much covered. Sirius XM integrated on iOS would cover that need as well. At that point, why would Apple care about the scenario of controlling your radio? Apple is skating to where the puck will be, and it isn't controlling your head unit. CarPlay and the like are about making head units a dumb terminal to your smartphone where it can be flexible, grow, adapt, and have access to cellular data.
