I assumed the NEX line had at least 5.1 Dolby digital surround, my bad.

why do you want to do surround in your car? either way it is most likely down mixing to LtRt aka stereo

Because movies are in surround sound and these units can play movies but unlike the two units I added links to the NEX series does not have surround sound.

It decodes Dolby, it decodes dots, com, but in mention in the manual of what output it provides. So I'm unsure myself

I'm sure that dot is dts that has been autocorrected. Not sure about com (maybe pcm)

Actually It doesnt even really do DD because there is not true center channel. Althought my system comes close with two extra tweeters in the middle air vents the only speaker that are running off the head unit

It can do phantom or phase I believe it's called. it uses 2 fronts Just like a home theater that doesn't have a center and simulates the center
