backup cam not working properly - 6000nex

I have my 6000nex installed in my 2002 Audi A4. The backup camera is receiving 12v constant power from the license plate lights, and the switched line is tapped into the reverse light.

I set the follow settings:

Back Camera Input - On

Camera Polarity - Battery

But nothing happens when I put the car in reverse.

If I change the Camera View setting from 'off' to 'on,' the video comes on when I put the car in reverse, but then a blank video screen will constantly come on while I am driving.

From reading the manual, I should only have to set Camera Input to 'on' and then the polarity to either 'battery' or 'ground.'

I would possibly think I tapped into the wrong reverse wire, but if I turn Camera View to 'on,' the video comes up when I put the car in reverse.

Is the camera connected to the brown RCA jack on the back of the HU, or the yellow one? It should be the brown one.

You have your camera plugged into the yellow dongle on the nex, that is wrong. You must plug into the brown RCA connector on the rear of the nex.

No, it is plugged into the brown RCA connector.

anything else?

The switched wire you refer to, is that the one on the camera or the HU?

How  do get 12v "constant power" ? you only get 12v when u put in reverse, how did you get 12v from backup light? fron the tail light and run the wire to the HU?

Black screen constanlly come on because you have "Camera View" turn on, even if you have backup light working you still get black screen, if you want to use "Camera View" function you need to hookup 12v constant power camera to your HU red wire, and backup light 12v go directly to input Violet/white wire.

sorry that wasn't clear. The camera has a led light built in for the license plate light, that is receiving 12v constant. The camera is receiving 12v switched from the reverse lamp in the tail light. I double checked the connections on the tail light and made sure the 12v switched power was working correctly and I still have nothing. I will go back out and check the rca connection on the back of the HU, just to make 100% sure it is right.

Just double checked the connection on the back of the HU...it was good to go.

So, the RCA connection is good on the HU, the camera is receiving 12v switched power from the reverse lights, but it still doesn't turn on the video when the car is put in reverse

Wait, the constant power is hooked to the license plate lamps...is that really constant? Wouldn't that only be constant when you have your headlights on? See what I'm getting at here?

The violet/white wire must be connected to a lead which changes voltage when in reverse.  vietnight mentioned it, but you have not.

The violet/white wire from the HU is connected. It is connected to a connector in the driver's footwell to receive the reverse input. Next step is to put the meter on that and make sure the connection is good.

Got it figured out. When I originally installed the HU, I called Crutchfield for the wires for the reverse and VSS...I finally figured it out the other day when I was on my way to work at 5am and turned on my fog lights...and the backup cam came on. Tested it today and sure enough, the reverse hookup was connected to the wire for the fog lights. After searching and searching (finding wiring diagrams for Audi's is quite difficult) and another call to Crutchfield, I got the right wire (on a different connector in a different area) and it works like it is supposed to now.

Glad to hear you got it fixed... :)

Im having basically the same issue. I have a Pontiac G5 with an AVIC 8000 NEX installed. I bought a rear mount cam and installed it a couple nights ago. I wired the red and black wires of the cam into the back up light wiring. I ran the yellow video cable up and plugged it into the cam connector in the 4 connector batch. I don't know if it was brown or not but I know the yellow pigtail cam connector a couple of you spoke of and its not that one. I get the same thing 99formulam6 got. When I select camera on, and pull it into reverse I get the cam view. When I take it out of reverse, I get the black screen saying things might be reversed which is clearable but it comes back in a few seconds. With Camera view off and I pull it into reverse, I get nothing. In order for this to work, does the reverse wire need to be held high or low. If I connect it to a 12V source, my backup lights should kick the camera on and off as I put it into and out of reverse. Am I correct in my assumptions here? Or any suggestions?

I have previously installed an AVIC-8000 and 7000 NEX and the backup camera works perfectly with both units.  After wiring an AVIC-6000 NEX in a 2003 Honda CR-V, the reverse camera trigger is not working.  Specifically, the camera works if I select camera view, but it will not work when shifting into reverse.  All other functions on the HU work exactly as they should.

Wiring:

   Camera

       Ground = Chassis

Power = ACC (cigarette lighter power)

Video = Brown input on HU

    Trigger

Violet/White lead from unit = Reverse light wire (ran wire from back of vehicle to front)

The HU polarity is set to battery, not ground.

Troubleshooting

I updated to the latest firmware version 1.11

I have tested the power to the camera, and it is receiving 12 volts when the key is in the acc position.

I have tested the trigger wire at the HU connection between the violet/white wire and wire running to the reverse bulb, and it is dead when out of reverse and has 12 volts when in reverse.

When I switch the "camera view" to on, it takes a good 10 seconds for the unit to switch to the camera view, but once it does, it works perfectly.  Thus, it is not a problem with the camera wiring or video input.

I have run a fused test jumper directly from the battery positive terminal to the HU, tested it to make sure it was carrying 12 volts and touched it to the violet/white reverse gear wire at the HU, and it will not switch over to camera view.

I believe the camera trigger is just bad, but I wanted to see if there is something else I could try or if I am missing anything.

put in right connector?

in nex6000 is a brown in and not yellow in

I had to send back the first 6000 I bought due to a bad trigger. There is a way to monitor all the outputs/inputs on one of the screens. Mine as I changed into and out of reverse the output to the camera never changed. New 6000 in the mail, worked just fine.

Thank you for your quick responses.  Yes, I have checked numerous times to make sure that I have it in the correct "brown" RCA input on the back of the HU.  I have not seen that screen, but I will check it out.  That would be very helpful to pinpoint the problem as the trigger.

I recently had an 8000nex installed in my car, originally the camera didn't work as the installer used the backup trigger to power the camera. The camera needed in my case to be powered by the + switched ignition power that also triggers the relay on my amp,now it works perfectly.

I appreciate and think I understand your post.  In your case, the original installer had connected the HU reverse gear signal wire (violet/white) to the positive lead of the camera.  If I read your post correctly and that was the situation, your camera would not have worked for two reasons.

First, your camera was not getting any power.  The violet/white reverse gear signal wire at the head unit is an input, not an output.  In other words, the violet/white reverse gear signal wire at the HU only has power when it receives it from an external source, i.e. gear shift wire, reverse light.  Thus, it cannot power anything.  Therefore, the camera would have had to have been rewired, as you stated in your post, to a 12 volt source.

Second, your HU was not receiving a 12 volt load on the reverse gear signal (violet/white) wire in order to change the display to the camera.  The violet/white reverse gear signal wire is connected to a momentary switch inside the HU that switches the HU to the camera RCA (brown in the case of the 8000, 7000 and 6000NEX') when it receives a 12 volt load.   As soon as the load is removed, the display switches back to normal.  In other words, your camera may have power because your key is in the acc. position, but you won't see anything it sees until something tells the HU to switch over to the camera RCA.  Plus, you only want it to do it at the right time.  For instance, you wouldn't want to connect the violet/white wire of the head unit to the horn because the only time the HU would switch over to the camera RCA is when you push the horn on your steering wheel.  While funny, that setup is not very practical or safe.  Thus, the person rewiring your camera circuit also rewired your violet/white reverse gear signal wire at your HU to a wire that only has 12 volts when your vehicle's transmission is placed into reverse gear.

I am requesting an RMA from the seller as I believe my problem is not in the wiring outside of the HU.  However, I am willing to listen to all ideas.
