Help finding the right power connection

I am having difficulties getting my rear back-up camera to work in my 2006 jetta TDI. The D2 powers up with the key turned to accessories. Once booted, if I shift from drive to reverse the camera switches flawlessly, but as soon as I turn the engine on, I loose the automatic switching to camera in reverse.

Note: as soon as I turn the key past accessories to engage the engine, the Avic reboots again, so the first boot process (key in accessories position) is interrupted by the engine start. Pioneer recommends that the unit be connected to the start wire What is the start wire? And, is there any connection that would give power only if the engine is running, but not in accessory mode. My installer claims no such wire exists in my VW Jetta TDI 2006

Can anyone help?

The unit is supposed to restart at engine start up. This is because when you engage the engine, the supplied voltage (accessory) drops to about 7volts or something, which is well below the required 12 volts needed. Then it pops back up to 12 volts.

Sounds like you have a problem with the reverse wire. Make sure that the reverse wire has power when the car is in reverse with the engine running.

Here is what my installer wrote to Pioneer, who have yet to address this issue:

After much testing it has been determined that the issue with the reverse camera is an internal problem with the Avic D2 unit that Paul has.

At 12.6 Volts(car off) it will switch flawlessly. As soon as the vehicle is started and receive running voltage (14.4V) the unit no longer switches to back-up mode when put into reverse.

We Tested his reverse wire with a multi-meter and always got battery voltage with the car off and running voltage with the car running.

We used a relay to change the signal ground, then reset the D2 and programmed the polarity of the back up camera to Ground. The D2 always switched to camera on whenever it was turned on. Even with no ground input signal. I tested the reverse input wire (purple/white) and when polarity was set to ground the wire was receiving a 350mV signal. (typical for a transistor looking for ground to switch.) We turned the unit off and I tested the wire, it had no voltage. Tested the wire for continuity to ground. was OL. So the wire isn't pinched anywhere. Everything short of the kitchen sink has been tried and all faults point to the D2. At 14.4V it simply does not switch to reverse mode.

Thanks for your input

Paul
