yeah this is old news, but good to inform anyone else who may not have known. You can still get plenty 3rd party tv tuners for much cheaper.

Just because I'm a technical kind of guy....

All channels are going digital, not digital and HD. I wish they were all going HD!

so in order to have TV in our vehicles, we are going to have to have satellite? no more antenna?

No, there will still be over-the-air signal, just a different format

Sirius announced it was working on it's "Sirius TV". Just like Dishtv, though for the vehicles. Not sure how that will work with the XM/Sirius merger.

Really? Wow, that sucks! I thought all broadcasting stations had to go HD but had a choice of picking either 720p or 1080i. So what's their other choice; 480i or 480p just as long as it's transmitted digitally? I was really excited about getting all-HD channels over-the-air come 2009. So much for that.

Their choices are:

480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i.

Thats:

SD, ED, HD, HD.

480 can be widescreen or standard.

A lot of them are broadcasting in HD as it is. Expect CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX to be HD. They are all in HD here already -- some programming is SD, but certainly not all. Most of the news feeds have went HD here, too.

Sirius BackSeat TV is the option I'm going with, initially launching with three stations:

1. Nickelodeon

2. Cartoon Network

3. The Disney Channel

They aren't working on it; it's coming. Chrysler has announced their vehicles available for order with it already -- expect a Sirius aftermarket tuner this summer.

I have a question -- why can't Pioneer make an ATSC tuner to receive the digital stations? It's really not that much different -- it just does MPEG decoding and the like. It's not THAT hard!
