I understand that you can't get video via the Pioneer iPod control interface, that you need to use another cable and input that to the aux video in of the unit, but I have some questions. I'm trying to decide if getting the video version is worth it so I don't have an iPod in front of me (and in fact have never even held one in my hands).
I don't have a VIDEO ipod, but I do have a regular one and think I can answer these questions correctly even though I haven't personally attempted each of these.

Can you have the Pioneer iPod controller module plugged in at the same time as the video cable?
Yes, but it wouldn't make any difference. You can physically hook both of them but if the pioneer adapter docking plug is connected the RCA video cable pretty much becomes worthless.

If so, can you tell the iPod to play videos using the Pioneer interface or will the AVIC-Z1 not even show that there are video files on the iPod in the iPod control menu?
Even though you can physically connect them both, once you connect the pioneer interface, it takes over and the video output won't function any more. Well it might function, but the screen on the ipod displays "pioneer" and you can no longer control the ipod from it's own controls so you have to use the head unit to select what to play. And no, I don't believe you can tell the ipod to play videos from the pioneer head unit.

And finally, can you assign the aux video in port to the iPod interface so when you say, "iPod" for the Voice Command it will not only switch to iPod control but will switch the display to the video out from the iPod? Now that I think about that I might not want that but still curious.
Thanks in advance.
No I'm pretty sure you can't do that.
So basically, all the cool video things you had in mind won't work. If you want to watch videos on the Z1 from the ipod, you can, but you have to unhook the pioneer interface, tell the head unit to go to AUX input and then grab your ipod and using the ipod itself, select the video you want to view and hit play on the ipod. Once you plug in the pioneer interface it will basically go into "audio" mode. You can control it from the head unit to play audio but not videos.
Sorry, it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but it's how it works.
