This took a lot of work to get this unit into such a small space but worked out to be pretty bitchen. I have encountered 2 problems though..

1) The harddrive does not like the vibration of the bike. I've tried mounting the fairing and radio housing in as much rubber as possible which did make it a little better but still not good enough. My next thought was to mount the harddrive externally. Has anyone tried this or have any other ideas?

2) Of course there is no Parking brake on a Harley and when I just ground that wire I get the error about my istallation is faulty. I know if there is a mod to bypass the z2 this would solve that but until someone comes up with one is there a way to get rid of the pesky error?

Thanks all,

Larry

Never tried #1.

Or number 2 for that matter, but don't most motorcycles usually have a green light when you're in neutral (only rode crotch rockets in my youth)? If the harley has one, then you might want to power a relay off of that light that would act as the parking brake switch. This way, putting the bike in neutral would be like engaging the parking brake and putting it in gear would be like releasing the parking brake.

Just a thought...

Buy a honda?

Just kidding, I don't know too many people who put these into bikes. I would love to see some pictures. But I don't know what to do about the vibration. You would either have to stop the vibration (new bike?) or stop the vibration from getting to the device, which would need a lot of room around the Z2 to isolate it with different materials.

Unfortunately, once you get that error, the only way to get rid of it is to reset the unit (recessed button to the right of eject). Now you want to make sure it doesn't come back. The only way besides bypassing it (not the best solution, but replace the Z2 hard drive with a Z1 hard drive and then bypass it like a Z1) is to not have that wire grounded while moving.

Action has a good idea on the neutral light (but I don't know much about harley wiring, I'm a japan/european kind of biker) but you could also hook it to the kickstand as well. When the kickstand is out, I think there is a switch that grounds a wire, you could hook it to that as well. And instead of tapping of the neutral light (if the harley has one) I would bet there is a wire somewhere that grounds when it's in neutral. The light then senses that and turns on.

But yes, like action said, either off the neutral sense or the kickstand sense.

The neutral light thing works...cool deal. It ticks me of though cause I should of thought of that one.. such a simple idea yet genius... Thanks

As for the rest I will upload some pictures of the bike and the Avic install. this bike was a six month build and come out pretty sweet I used the PAC SWI so I could use the stock radio controls on the handle bars. installed the blutooth and sirius units.

Mow for the Honda comments:

Until I talk to a goldwing rider that had his girl "get off" on the back of a Goldwing I'll stick with American thunder.

Thanks again for all the help and if I ever get the hard drive problem fixed I will post the resolution.

HAHA! Touche! Point taken. I think gold wing riders girls are more prone to falling asleep then "getting off" haha. Nice. :D

I have a friend with a gold wing and he hooked this up:

www.viberider.com

He says it works rather well, his wife just gets embarrassed. :)

Screw American thunder, I want Japanese SPEED! :) (or Italian Speed, but my ninja zx12 is way faster than my ducati could ever home to be)

For the Hard drive,

You could go here http://www.cablesonline.com/44pinlapinri.html

and get some 44 conductor ribbon cable and some IDC Cable connectors then mount the HDD in an area that doesn't vibrate as much.

Duplicated post removed.

That looks great! But aren't you worried about rain?

Posted Jun 12, 2007 · 01:08 UTC#14

the only place you could mount a z2 on a harley that doesn't vibrate is the trailer carrying it!:!:

looks good, but i dont know about having those magnetic antennas so close to a hard drive

I think it's fine. The magnets are at least 3 inches away. And the magnetic

media is inside a few shielded metal enclosures between the platters and the

antennas. Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. We have tried doing tests to

delete stuff off floppy disks and hard drives with magnets and it takes more

thank you would think to hurt a hard drive. I think he is ok there.

I think the one on the left is the GPS antenna and the one on the right is Sat Radio, but yes there are 2 antennas.

You wont have time to say wtf... It is nuts but a walking billboard. Amazing install though.
