I am writing this up in case it could possibly help someone else make a decision on what to purchase.
Should I buy the Z1 or Z2 or D3. The Z2 was expensive but was what I really wanted, D3 was $700 to $1000 from what I was seeing. I started seeing the Z1 on e-bay refurbished for 999.00. I found a good dealer with good e-bay feedback and won a refurbished Z1 for $1,030. It was delivered in three days factory sealed from Pioneer with a 90 day warranty. From the same dealer I bought an extended 3 year warranty for $79. I purchased the bluetooth, steering wheel controls and backup camera from others on e-bay. The total package was $1500. according to my figures about the same as the D3 with comparable accessories.
I had the unit installed by a pioneer dealer for $300. including all add-ons. I downloaded the bluetooth upgrade from this site, my refurbished unit was marked May 06. When I tried to load the bluetooth CD my unit said it was already loaded, I guess pioneer did it when they refurbished it! All I had to do was add the two wire bypass and all was well.
My refurbished unit looked brand new, no fingerprints on the screen and nothing on the hard drive. It included all wiring and manuals that normally come with a new unit.
I have a treo cell phone from alltel and it paired up with the z1 just fine. The phone book from the treo would not load so I am just doing that manually on the Z1 no big deal.
Everything is working fine and I am totally satisfied with the unit. It is going to take countless hours playing with it to become familiar with even half the features but that is half the fun. I think one reason it is working so well is because professionals installed the unit right the first time. I am sure glad that I did not try it myself!!!
The unit is not perfect but it is an awesome unit. I had been looking at threads on this sight about all the bad things,I just thought someone might like to read something positive about the z1.
This sight has been very helpful, thanks to all for all the great information and help.
