I just got my disk and I can confirm you have to enter a password for authentication and that is based on your units device number. I will be be loading it later today and will keep you posted.
Updating Z1 to Z2 with Software
Ok I just got my password. It stats that the media will only work with my device number. Now Iam not sure all that seeing that I have a CD and there is no way that it would be made for my unit and only mine. I would think you could upgrade with this disk and just use the password that I got. However the disclaimer says if you send it in for service they will not repair if you have a different device number then the software upgrade in their database.
u have a PM
From the activation site faq:
Q: I receive the message, “Media Number already in-use.â€
A: Please confirm that you are using the correct Media Number located on the Media Number Card bundled with the update disc. Each Media Number is unique and cannot be used to update multiple Pioneer navigation systems.
And from the detailed walkthru:
** NOTE **
This password is unique and can ONLY be
used with this Device Number and Media
Number combination.
Yup... did you use someone elses copy... I think you would need the password they got to unlock the DVD
You put in the media number and your serial number, this generates a unique password that will only work on your serial numbered unit. And obviously once you register a media number to a serial number you can't use it again. So unless someone comes up with a keygen, a copy of the disc is useless to Z1 Owners.
Ok I see.. the DVD contains passwords for all Z1's made out there and the server knows the passwords which then allows to install... I was thinking once you got the password it would work on all units but it relates to the IS of the Z1... hmmm
Well I am upgrading mine when I get home tonight.. See what happens...
So I don't think the DVD has all the passwords for every Z1 ever made, but I do think that it has an algorithim that can take the password and extract the serial number from it, then it can compare to the serial of your unit and work or not.
So the whole reason you even generate a password (other than just supplying one with the dvd) is so that they can take the media number and your serial number and run it through whatever algorithim that generates the password for just that reason, so you can't pirate.
If someone figured it out they could build a keygen that would allow you to make a valid password based on the media number and your serial.
If more than 3 people send me their media ID, device ID, and password, I think I could crack it.
Well there you go. PM Hyperite your info and let him go to work. It doesn't matter if you give it to him because it only works on your unit. But with enough info he might be able to reverse engineer the algorithm.
Couldn't you just spoof the hardware ID, like MAC spoofing?
Couldn't you just spoof the hardware ID, like MAC spoofing?
How would you go about doing that?
Hell, I don't know, I'm not a coder, but, that's similair to the Vista WGA crack....It spoofs the BIOS version I believe. Just seems easier, in theory, of course....

I just said I wasn't a coder, it was just a suggestion...

I know, but it sounds as well thought out as the guy who wanted to run OS X on his Z1 ![]()
No offense of course ![]()
Completely different principle. He wants an entirely different OS, with no app support. I think it would be MUCH easier to spoof the hardware ID.
None taken BTW ![]()
Pioneer is being slow to release the Z1 update disc to usa so they can modify the security features with each bundle of discs they sell. They will probably sell a hundred or so.....then modify the security alog rhymy or whatvever its called. That way if some one cracks it..........it will only work on selected discs from whatever batch they produce. Pioneer is being very greedy with the Z1 release for some reason. The D1, D2, and N1...etc...are simple backup copies that will work. I do not understand why they are being so greedy with the Z1 upgrade...with security features,
that are not used on their other series. In my opinion the map update should be free. Ford gives out a free upgrade disc every year to owners of their cars and trucks that have the nav system. They do this as a safety issue. Pioneer should do the same and stop being so greedy, piggy, money hungry, and just poopy.
I agree. In fact, it was just a coincidence that I wrote Pioneer and asked them about a map upgrade that I found out about it, and then I asked them if the unit was still under warrenty if it was covered; which, of course, it is not. Pretty absurd. I guess they assume if you were dumb enough to pay $2200 for this POS in the first place then you'll pay $250 for a map it should have had in the first place.
You do realize that Pioneer BUYS the mapping info from TeleAtlas every year? Thats why they don't give the updates away. I am sure it ain't cheap so they have to charge something for the disks, I just think they need to lower that price unless it all goes to TeleAtlas
Hi all,
My opinion:
• Map-updates could be chargable
• Bug-fixes (like BlueTooth) should be free
• New-features (like updating Z1 to Z2 feature set) could be chargable - if it's know what features you pay for
