Learning? Yes indeed.

So I've recently been commuting into the office, and the Z1 tries to route me on a freeway route. I know better with traffic to take a side street route.

On the third time I request the destination, it routed me on my preferred route rather than on the route it started off with.

All of this isn't very usable, except for right around areas you frequent. Chances are any time you are truly needing navigation is when you are going somewhere unfamiliar, or if your route has changed due to traffic conditions. But even then, I would hope it would take a new route to avoid the traffic and deviate from your preferred route.

Has anyone else noticed the learning capability?

Interesting point. You can tell it to avoid freeways, tollways, etc. but your point is still valid. You're using the Nav because you don't know the area so how do you know to do that?

That being said it would be the same for a human navigator. How can you possibly know not to go there if you don't learn not to go there? The Z1 did it's job and learned not to go on the freeway for that one route but only because you've driven the route a lot so you already KNOW the way to go.

I wonder if your avoidance of the freeway would affect future route requests.

I have found that not to be the case. I plotted a few trips just for grins and giggles and was amazed at some of the routes it sent me on. But then I started looking at some of them closely and realized it was keeping me on the freeways as much as possible. Even to the point of taking me on somc very circuitous routes. Then I decided the calculated routes could actually be as quick as the way I thought it should show. So I went into my defaults and changed all the default speeds for the different types of roads to speeds that were closer to what I would drive. Then I changed it to give me the shortest route...not necessarily the fastest route. Both changes made differences in the calculated route. I am much happier with the routes it is giving me now.

so far the only thing tried to teach it, it learned in 2-3 tries. so far i am happy but it was simply just back roads to my house. sometimes i like to flip thru the "multiple routes" and look at the profiles to see what other options were out there. some are very creative.

Yes, I've noticed the learning capabilities, as well. I've used it to NAV to work, and drove my usual route, which was significantly different from the selected route. It learned my prefered route after only 1 trip.
