AVIC-Z1 Heat issues??

Whenever I use my AVIC Z1 for a prolonged period of time (over an hour) both the cd player and the radio stop playing music. After a few minutes whichever one I'm listening to starts working like nothing happened, a few minutes later the sound drops off again. The unit keeps doing this till after I turn off the car for a few hours than things work ok for another hour at which time the whole process starts all over. Everything else seems to be working ok.

I have a 2001 Corvette Coupe, I have the amp in the rear compartment of the car, is it possible the amp is heating up and causing the problems I'm having?

Thanks,

Rocky

Could be. Are you pushing your amp really hard? It might be going into protection because of heat buildup. Is it only the radio and CD? What about when playing music from the library? If two sources are going out, but you can switch sources and get sound again (immediately) I would think it's the unit and not the amp. However, I'd troubleshoot the amp first.

Thanks for the reply Bridge.

I haven't put any music on the hard drive so I have no idea if that's affected. The music stops playing no matter how hard I'm pushing the system. I noticed yesterday when I was driving home and the unit wasn't functioning that the voice commands from the navigation wasn't working either. I went out and started the car after it sit for a couple of hours and everything was working ok.

What I'm thinking about doing is moving the amp behind the seat, hopefully that'll solve my problem.

Thanks again,

is it hot out? did you interface things properly? example being connecting 2 ohm speakers to a 4 ohm amp... sometimes can cause this. also, the idea of switching sources was more on track so you can determine if its the head unit or an amp. a bit more info on your setup would be helpful

The first time it happened it was in the 80's and I had to have the air conditioner on the second time it happened (yesterday) it was in the early morning and I was driving through the mountains, the tempature must have been in the low 70's.

The car's pretty much a garage queen, its a 2001 with only 13K miles on it. I had the stereo profesionally installed so I couldnt tell you much about the set up. FYI... I have a JBL Grand Touring GTO755.6 II 6 way amp installed.

rocky i dont know that vehicle or equipment but as a rule of thumb amps and speakers need to work together. Try switching the source and go from there. maybe someone with info on that equipment/car can shed some light on compatibility. and acutally a better idea then tearing things apart if it was professionally installed is take it to where it was installed, see what they say. You dont want to fool with their work, youll lose any hope for warranty.

Is the amp in a location where you can see it when you experience this problem? I'm not familiar with this particular model, but some amps have a protection indicator, usually a red light. See if that light is coming on when you lose sound. Also, you might try taking the amp out of the loop and just let the HU power the four door speakers and see if you continue to have the problem. If so, it points toward the unit having an issue. Hopefully, it's just the amp. While not cheap it would be cheaper than the HU! :D Good luck!

It's been awhile since I've been to this forum much less posted and it appears I'm not the only person what was having a problem with the heat issue.

My next question is did the software fix work? I was going to download the files and put them on a cd myself but after reading the problems some of the other members were having I've decided to call Pioneer tomorrow (Monday) and have them send me out a cd.

I dont plan on taking my Corvette out of moth balls till May or June so I'm not in to much of a hurry.

Yes, the firmware update worked

Excellent, thanks whtcrxghst.

When I first started to experience the problem back in August I called the stereo shop that sold me the unit and the owner said to bring the car back in and they'd pull the HU out and return it to Pioneer. The problem with that is I had the stereo installed when I was living in California and have since moved to Colorado.

In order for me to get the HU taken out I'd have to take it to one of the local audio shops near the house and pay them $70.00 an hour, box it up and ship it back to Los Angeles and gawed knows how long it would have taken me to get it back.

Now that I know the update works all I have to do is contact Pioneer and have them send me out a cd. Life is good :D

Thanks again
