I am not sure if this question has already been asked. When making a back-up copy of the Navi DVD I understand you need a Dual layer DVD as you need to store about 7 GB of info. However, do you need to use a DVD -R Dual layer DVD, or will a +R Dual Layer DVD work? The reason I am asking is because all I can find in the stores are +R Dual Layer DVD's. I am not even sure if -R Dual Layer DVD's are available.

+R DL works fine.

I copied mine on a +R DL. Works great. I'm using the copies in the car, keeping the originals at home.

Ok thanks for letting me know. I'm going to buy some dual layer +r DVD's and see how it goes.

I use memorex dvd+r dl. Haven't have any isssues with those. Plus I got them pretty cheap when I worked for BB and CC.

So only DL works? And what program is best to make an backup?

You can use a regular 4.7GB DVD, but you have to rip the DVD to your hard drive and remove the points of interest to make room.

Use Nero, or Alcohol 120. Personally I always use nero. If you want to play it safe, make an .iso of the CD first, then burn it.

If you going to use store bought media, cntrylvr79 is right, i would use memorex, or verbatim.

I have used Verbatim and it works fine:)

Burned with Nero 7

Well I tried it and it worked fine. I used Memorex +R DL DVD's and backed up the entire Navi DVD, about 7 GB. I just used the disk copy utility in Nero. No problem.

Thanks for the info that I got from here.

Hi what is an ISO?

Hi what is an ISO?
You, my friend, need to go back to Basic Computing 101 :)

Hi, probably so. Is it a acronym for saving a copy/image of the file/disk to the pc? I haven't burned many cd's in the last 3-4 years as now that I have an iPod I really don't need to anymore.

However the good news is I was able to successfully burn two copies of the Nav CD on my 1st go at it. I then tried them in the D3 and thy seem to function fully.

I used alcohol 120% and it worked great. I initially tried with Sonic, but for some reason it wouldn't read the DVD DL + R I inserted in the drive (Fuji Film 8.5G), I kept getting an error "no disc in drive" etc.

I googled this guide to DVD media quality. Verbatim is a good suggestion.

Where are you guys buying your media? I went to a local pc richard and son and a radio shack and couldn't find good quality media (bunch of low-rate dvd+r making companies). There's a best buy, but it's a good distance away... according to the website they don't carry good quality dvd+r's either, but maybe their entire store inventory isn't on the website? maybe i'll try online, but for something so small i'd rather just go out and buy it.

www.supermediastore.com

I shop from both of these. Look at their Taiyo Yuden discs or Verbatim discs. those are the best, but can be a bit pricier than the cheapo brands

I had mostly bad results trying to back up my D3 DVDs yesterday. The west DVD copied first go with this setup:

Sonic s/w

NEC ND-6650A (I think) with the latest firmware

Fujifilm +R DL blank

The east DVD copy failed at the end of the write three times.

I switched to a different PC with TSSTcorp TS-L352B (also latest firmware) and tried twice more but still no luck.

So 5 failed attempts. This is starting to get expensive. I was going to try a Sony +R DL blank but they're $6 a disc here. I've also downloaded Nero to see if software is the problem. Not sure if the 15 day demo will allow me to copy a disc though.
