Hey guys, I got my avic d3 installed today at best buy but when I turn my lights on and off the navi screen stays the same even when I go to navi menu and go to the display settings and press night time its still bright, what am I doing wrong?

Posted Aug 11, 2007 · 04:16 UTC#2

The D3 doesnt have a dimmer function to automatically change between day and night. I believe other AVICs have it but not the D3. I was pretty dissapointed to learn this. Maybe one of these guys knows a way to change it?

I have my dimmer set to around 30... i find that this is bright enough to be seen when its sunny out and dim enough not to bother your eyes at night. However its tough to watch movies at this level during the day so you have to constantly readjust. its a pain in the ass

Your illumination wire isn't connected.

So it does dim automatically when you turn your lights on?

Posted Aug 11, 2007 · 05:40 UTC#5

what kind of vehicle you got?

It should, yes.

I have an infiniti qx4 97 and I had the installation done at best buy. When I got home I look in the box and there's a pink wire and a purple wire still in the box is it one of those?

Posted Aug 11, 2007 · 13:45 UTC#8

No it's not. Though you should def go back and have them fix the problem because that's not the only problem you have. They also didn't hook up the vss wire or the reverse wire. now if you're not going to have a back up camera then the purple/white wire is not needed. The pink wire should have been hooked up. Just to give you the info in case the installer tries to say the vss doesn't exist in your car, here it is. Along with the illumination wire. Tell the installer not to be lazy and do the job he's getting paid to do right.

Illumination is pink/green in the radio harness.

VSS is white/blue in pin 26 of the ecu above the gas pedal

Im going to be taking my car back to the installer to yell at him and make him hookup my illumination wire...

stupid nub question... whats the VSS wire? and whats it do?

Posted Aug 11, 2007 · 18:33 UTC#10

no need to yell.................lol

Posted Aug 11, 2007 · 23:13 UTC#11

No need to yell. The vss improves tracking accuracy.

Posted Aug 12, 2007 · 04:19 UTC#12

VSS = Vehicle Speed Sensor (I think). As the others said, it's just used to keep the nav accurate, but not needed.

I bet your installed hooked up your illumination wire but connected it to the wrong wire.

Ok so I went to best buy today and they said the only reason they didn't hook it up was because it would blow the light fuse. Is this true, is this happening to anybody else?

Posted Aug 12, 2007 · 16:29 UTC#14

Ahh lazy installer it will not blow the light fuse.

I have a 2005 RSX, my Day/Night mode does NOT work either....

What wire or wires need to be connected to what. and/or is it just a setting problem.

* under Hardware info/ Connection Status- Illumination shows "OFF"

Please help.

I jsut got it installed today and the daytime/nightime feature does not work. What should i do about this?

Posted Aug 21, 2007 · 04:40 UTC#17

2005RSX,

If you used an aftermarket Honda harness for your D3, you should connect the orange wire on the harness to the "Illum" wire on the D3.

If properly hooked up, the AVIC will not blow your light fuse.

I have an Avic D1 and my screen goes to night colours when the headlights are turned on. I never had any fuse problems whatsoever.

I love how it switches btwn the day and night colours automatically when you turn your headlights on, that is one very important feature. The Avic would be a bloody spotlight in your face at night if it was in day colour mode!

As for the VSS, hook that up too. It improves accuracy and continues to track your vehicle when satellite signals are intermittantly lost (caused by tunnels, tall buildings in a city, heavy trees over the road, comets whizzing by the earth, etc).

It should if the illumination wire is hooked to a 12volt + wire when the lights come on. I wired my corvette to the rear tail light, unit dims as soon as the lights come on.

I had the same problem with the contrast of the screen , turned out that the illumination wire was not connected, so i got it hooked up and now when i turn my head lights on the screen darkens to nice easy on the eyes level and when i turn my head light off like in the day the screen brightens up. ( note i don`t think the illumination works in the auto head light mode) but i could be wron , it just does not work in my 2004 yukon.

I have a 2004 yukon and i had the illumination wire from the d-3 hooked into the auto head light control and it works with my auto head lights perfectly, the d-3 dims when my head light come on at night and the map goes into the night mode ( easy on the eyes)

Thank you, Superchiu, I did as you said and it worked... thanks again.
