Installed 10 minutes ago - Stuck in NYC, but I'm in Virginia

Hi,

I just installed my Avic D3 into my 2000 S4 about 20 minutes ago.

I booted her up just to mess around and it has my car in the middle of some park in Manhatten. I'm in Virginia, what gives? My car isn't driveable currently so I wasn't able to drive around to jog it. Is this normal?

I also have a couple other questions/issues:

1. When I start the car and the unit goes through it's boot phase it takes a long time and always asks me if I'd like to start the Nav mode or go into Store Demo Mode. What gives?

2.My speakers chirp and hiss. Could this be because I'm running the outputs through my OEM Bose amp or is something else wrong?

3. During the install I skipped hooking up the vehicle speed wire because I couldn't find it on the car. Is that fine or do I really need to hook it up?

Thanks,

Jacob

Hi,

Yes if the car is not where the system can get a gps lock. IE outside.

I also have a couple other questions/issues:

Gotta drive the car to get rid of that

2.My speakers chirp and hiss. Could this be because I'm running the outputs through my OEM Bose amp or is something else wrong?

It's because of that great blose amp.

3. During the install I skipped hooking up the vehicle speed wire because I couldn't find it on the car. Is that fine or do I really need to hook it up?

Helps with tracking accuracy.

Speed Sense blue/white ECM, gray 32 pin plug, pin 9

Notes: The ECM (Engine Control Module) is above the driver kick panel.

Thanks,

Jacob

Welcome.

Wow, very thorough response. Thanks Batman.

One more question: I installed my antenna just above my cluster but under the dash. This is where I stashed my antenna on my RNS-E set-up and it worked great. Do you think the D3 antenna will just as well or does it really need to be above the dash with line of sight to the satellite?

Thanks,

Jacob

Dunno. What's a RNS-E? Best bet is to get the car outside and try it.

The prompt about the store demo mode will stop once you've driven the car a while. It needs to go through a little bit of a learning mode before that goes away. One trip around the neighborhood should be enough to stop getting the prompt.

I originally didn't hook up the vss wire and thought the unit worked fine. It might have me a half a block off here and there until it got an updated signal. I never went downtown or into tunnels, so I am not sure if it is really necessary, but I did connect it a few days later, and there is a bit of an improvement. Nice to be able to get the vehicle information display working, too.

As far as your main question, is your unit getting a good signal? A few people have had theirs put them in nyc, so I assume that is the default location if no other info is available.

It's probably a terrible signal since my car is in my basement garage, but my RNS-E nav did pick up signal when in the same location. I guess I just need to get my car fixed so I can drive the thing! Thanks guys.
